Chapter 10

Elena glanced toward Lucy’s usual sun lounger, but just like the rest of the morning, it was empty.

She hadn’t seen Lucy since she had dropped her back at the hotel two days before, and Elena was trying not to worry. Logically, she knew there was no conspiracy at the hotel, no demon monster snatching guests, and silencing managers, but there had been an air of insidiousness to the place ever since her father’s firing, which was hard to shake. Elena knew she wasn’t the only one feeling this. The whole staff had been left uneasy by what had happened. Her father was well liked, and no one was happy to see him go.

Elena decided to go up to Lucy’s room after her shift finished—if she made it through the two following hours without dying of boredom. Resigned, she leaned back in her chair, face twisting into a scowl when she saw a familiar figure hovering on the other side of the pool.

Small in stature, Brown-skinned, and her black hair styled in a severe bob, Sofia Lopez had wasted no time in settling into the role of hotel manager. Lucy hadn’t been kidding when she said Sofia would be keeping a close eye on things. Between following Elena and David around, it was a miracle she had the time to get her job done.

Elena could understand it, but it didn’t mean she had to like it, growing tired of turning corners and finding Sofia waiting for her. What did she think she was going to find? Elena embezzling money at the front desk in the middle of the day? Pickpocketing guests lounging around the pool?

It was infuriating.

She lifted her hand to wave because Sofia wasn’t subtle—and Elena knew it annoyed her. Was it the wisest move? No, but she had to get through the day somehow.

“Antagonizing the boss again, I see,” Marcos said as they strode past her chair. “Where’s your girlfriend today? There’s not trouble in paradise, is there?”

Elena glared. “She is not my girlfriend. And we’re not involved anymore.”

Shock flashed across Marcos’s face. “Why not?”

“It’s…complicated.” She’d kept the details of Lucy’s unofficial investigation to herself so far. It was hard keeping a secret from her best friend, and it wasn’t like Elena didn’t trust them, but she knew the less people knew, the better. As far as Marcos was concerned, her father was biding his time before deciding his next move.

“Oh my life!” Marcos clutched a hand to their chest. “You realized you were starting to have feelings for her so you broke it off?”

“What? No!” Elena’s voice went up an octave—which she knew didn’t help her case. But Marcos didn’t know what they were talking about. Did Elena wish she was still spending her nights tangled in Lucy’s sheets? Of course, but just because the sex was fantastic. There were no feelings involved.

Elena didn’t do feelings.

“She was the one that called it off, anyway,” Elena said, and Marcos raised their eyebrows.

“Wow. That’s a first—how’s your ego?”

Elena flipped them off.
