Day after day, curious onlookers stalked the police search from the banks of the river. “It doesn’t take much to collect a crowd these days,” remarked Assistant Harbormaster Henry Silverthorn to Cleveland News reporter Howard Beaufait. “If you just stand and look in the water a lot of others will soon gather around and look, too.”

None of the other body parts would ever be found; the woman would remain unknown. On May 3, Gerber received a poignant telegram from Florence Akers of Kennett Missouri: “Wire description of body found May 3 [sic] might be my daughter Kay Akers.” His reply the next day was professional, dispassionate, and terse: “From Fair to medium color of skin. Medium Brown Hair. Approximately 5’ 5” tall Weight 115–125 Age from 25–30. Old operative scar mid line of abdomen 6 inches long. Old scar on right side of abdomen 4 inches long. Might have worn 5 to 6 shoe. Head both arms and hands/Right leg and foot still missing. Dr. Gerber Coroner.”
