I found Jérôme’s letter in my mailbox when I came back from the hospital. It was strange to receive a letter from him. Until then, we’d communicated only through email.

After picking up the letter, I took the elevator to the top floor and then ran up the stairs to my roof terrace. I’d stopped counting the days since Jérôme’s last response weeks ago. I was continuing to write him every day, but I had never mentioned my friendship with Daniel. I didn’t mean to hide it from him; I was just afraid that putting it into words would make it disappear. That was what Vera said about the soul: you can’t write about it directly, because when it’s regarded head-on, it vanishes.

I caught my breath and opened the envelope right outside the door of my room:
