Chapter Seven

June in Arizona. Moderate temperatures, clear skies… Perfect weather for murder and mayhem. Finn flicked on his turn signal as he saw the exit for the college approaching on the right, and checked in his rearview mirror to see if Robby had caught it.

Robby's blinker came on immediately, and Finn turned his attention back to the road. When Scott and Robby insisted he couldn't face Lassiter alone, he'd resisted, but not too much. The truth was, as long as it wasn't Cannon at his side, distracting him with worries over his personal safety, backup was good.

Robby and Scott were both big men, accustomed to taking care of themselves and others. He seriously doubted whether this would be a "first rodeo" for either of them, and it was something of a relief to have a man with him that he could count on to hold his own in a crisis and make logical, reason-based decisions instead of reacting emotionally.

He'd made only a token refusal when Robby announced that he was going through town this morning anyway and would willingly stand behind Finn.

The staff parking lot closest to the campus building that housed his office was nearly empty at this hour of the morning. Admittedly, there were few faculty on campus as it was the in between time, when Spring Session classes had ended and Summer Session classes hadn't started.

Finn was teaching two classes on campus this summer, and Cannon was finishing his assignment with a weekly seminar on neurosurgery as well as supervising field placements for the young group of hopefuls.

Robby pulled into the space next to his, and Finn opened his door and exited the car. Robby fell into step beside him silently as he walked toward the building.

"You're sure this is what you want to do?" the other man finally asked.

Finn pulled open the heavy door and waved Robby in. "Yes. I can't go to the police. At the very least, Cannon would lose his job here. Worst case scenario? I'm guessing he could lose his license to practice, maybe even go to jail."

"I’m pretty sure that the extenuating circumstances would be taken into consideration."

Finn shook his head and led the way to his office. "There's no guarantee of that. His reputation would be ruined even if a jury finds his actions justified."

"You're all concern for Malloy, but don't you stand to lose just as much? If word of what we're doing here gets out, that is?"

"Maybe. But I made my own choices, and what's happening is a result of my own actions. Cannon's only sin was walking into my office at an inopportune moment." As he said the words, something clicked in his head, in his heart that had been out of sync for the last two months. "I'll do what I have to in order to protect him. I love him," he ended simply, feeling the rightness of the words.

He met Robby's brown gaze steadily. "I love him."

Robby's eyes widened, then he grinned, flashing even white teeth.
