Chapter 6

Mike waited impatiently at the curb at the arrivals side of the airport. He was relieved that Kurt and Maggie had been sent home while the rest of the Prague mission was being executed by other members of the unit. That was petty and selfish and he felt only a little bit guilty about his opinions. Kurt had texted him the moment they touched down.

He saw Kurt carrying luggage as Maggie was pushed along in a wheelchair by some airport employee. Oh God, Maggie looked awful. Her face was pale, and dark circles lay under her eyes. Mike raised a hand and Kurt directed the person pushing the wheelchair in Mike’s direction.

As the wheelchair stopped a few feet from the SUV, Mike dropped to one knee beside Maggie. He reached out and squeezed her hand. “How bad was the flight?”

“Hubert okayed an upgrade to business class,” Kurt said. “It still wasn’t great.”

“I’m just really tired.” Maggie bent her arm and coughed hard enough to shake her whole body. Her voice was hoarse and ragged.

“Oh God, are you sure you’re okay to go home? We can go straight to the hospital if that’s a better choice,” Mike said.

“I’m on antibiotics and an inhaler and steroids and fuck if I remember what else. Mostly I need some sleep and some tea that doesn’t taste like dirt.” Maggie sounded annoyed.

Mike stood and helped Maggie out of the wheelchair and into the front seat of the SUV while Kurt tossed the bags in the back.

As Kurt opened the rear door to slide in, Mike grabbed Kurt’s shoulder. His lover looked stressed and almost as tired as Maggie. “I’m glad you two are back.” Mike squeezed Kurt’s shoulder. Kurt gave him a half-hearted smile.

It took about half an hour to get to the house.

“I thought you were taking me to my place,” Maggie said Mike pulled into the driveway.

“You need someone to make sure you eat and rest and take all the meds. You’re staying here with us until I’m sure you’re recovered enough to function,” Mike said, expecting a ration of objections.

“Couple of days, tops,” Maggie said.

Mike was disconcerted by the minimal protest. As he got out, he exchanged a glance with Kurt, who gave him look of worry. Mike guided Maggie into the house and straight to the bedroom.

“I want a shower. We’ve been traveling over twenty-four hours.” Maggie sat on the edge of the bed and toed off her shoes. Another round of coughing bent her over.

“Only if you let me help. You look like you might pass out,” Mike said.

“I’m fine,” she snapped, and began coughing again.

“Not true in any way.” Mike sat on the bed beside her, and pulled her into his arms. He looked at Kurt who stood a few feet away, leaning against the doorframe. Kurt had a solemn expression. “You’re sick, still really sick. If you don’t give in and let me and Kurt take care of you, you’re going to end up in the hospital.”

“I want a shower.
