I pace around, alone in Alissa’s room, looking at the crumpled sheets on the bed where Alissa rocked my world last night. The morning sun looms over the horizon, but the beauty of the Texan sunrise is lost on me.

I am an emotional mess.

From my mom’s utter lack of care regarding my existence, to Alissa and her body, her face and her heart slowly pulling me into the quicksand of emotions…and probably love.

Yup. I am thinking of the L word, because I know what it feels to be in love, and this is eerily similar.

Alissa had to leave before sunrise—work emergency or something, but she had left a little note by the side of the bed, ‘have to leave urgently, but I’ll be back soon. You are always on my mind. Miss you.’

Now, that sounds like love-talk to me. Or relationship talk at the minimum.

Am I already in a damn relationship with my pretend boyfriend’s sister who wants to take over the company he wants?

Yes, last night was incredible. It was more than incredible. It was the best sex I’ve had in years, and yes, I am completely head over heels for an American born, British educated cowgirl, but what about Chris?

I need to tell him the truth. I can’t keep lying to both Chris and Alissa and risk losing them both!

I mull over my thoughts, when suddenly, I realize I need advice.

I sit on the edge of the bed, phone pressed to my ear, nervously twirling a strand of my hair.

“Nicole? It’s me,” I say, as Nicole screams over the phone.

“Oh my god, I was about to call you! How are you, girl?” Nicole’s voice seems chirpy. At least someone is happy to talk to me.

“I am good. I know you are in LA, and you must be knee-deep with the opening of your studio, but I really needed to talk to someone. Do you have a min?”

“Of course, baby. What’s up?”

So, you remember Chris, the guy who revived my career three years ago and became my best friend?"

"Uh…yeah the guy who owns Anderson Stores, right?"

"Exactly him. He asked me to pretend to be his girlfriend to impress his conservative family. He is gay, and the whole charade is supposed to help him secure the CEO position in his family's corporation."

"And you agreed to this because?"

"Because it's Chris. We've been through a lot, and if a pretend relationship can help him, why not?"

Nicole pauses, absorbing the complexity of the situation. "Alright, so you were sure you could handle being the conservative, pretend girlfriend of a gay guy, while hiding your own sexuality?"

I chuckle. "Initially, yes. But then I met his sister, Alissa. She's also vying for the CEO position. And she's... into women."

"You're kidding. Don't tell me you two—"

"Yes, we did. And it wasn't just a fling. Being with her feels like... finding a missing piece of myself, you know? But now I'm lying to her, to Chris, and maybe even to myself."

"Wait, hold on, does Alissa know about the whole pretend relationship setup?"

"No, she doesn't.
