No. This time, I wasn’t about to let him get away. We were going to talk things out, even if he didn’t want to. Okay, I hadn’t spoken up earlier or the other times he’d confronted me this week. But how was I supposed to know that he wanted me when he’d consistently shown me that he didn’t? It was time for us to get everything out in the open, to stop these stupid fucking games and say what we were actually feeling.

My heart pounded. If…if I laid everything out and told him that I still wanted him, I was taking a huge risk.

But I had to take that chance.

I headed back up to the mansion as fast as I could, cursing my heels for slowing me down.

By the time I’d covered all of the downstairs of the mansion, plus another circuit of the outside space, I was starting to lose hope. There was no sign of him anywhere. The upstairs was off-limits, so that left only one option—he’d gone.

The off-limits thing didn’t apply to me, since I had best-friend perks. I avoided the main staircase, slipping through the kitchen and pantry, then up the servants’ staircase. Making my way into the guest room where I’d stashed all my stuff, I hit the light switch next to the door and crossed over to the bed.

Sitting on the side, I reached for my phone, my mind full of thoughts of Xavier. Had I really been so blind all this time that it had taken seeing him with another girl to escalate things between us? Had he been blind to it, too?

I had to see him. To make him listen to me. To make him understand that I wanted to be with him. Even if he didn’t feel the same way, it was time to be honest with each other.

Navigating to my contacts, I hit the call button. The phone rang but went to voicemail after a few seconds. Instead of leaving a message, I sent him a text.

Me: We need to talk. Please call me
