Keegan was a fool. An ass. A dipshit.
He had allowed his lust for a sexy woman to override his sense. He had broken a vow to her. Had walked back on a promise.
Had taken advantage of her in her time of need.
Sure, she had seemed certain. Had consented both verbally and physically. But he knew now that she was caught up in the moment. That the insane chemistry between them had fooled her into thinking that she wanted something she had sworn wouldnât be on the table.
He tossed another hay bale into the empty stall, fury burning his insides.
He should have apologized right away. He should have followed her when she slipped away. When she left his room without a word. He should have done something.
But no. He was such a man of words. Such a man of his word.
His word meant shit, and he had proven it to himself again.
He had to do something to fix things.
Keegan finished his work, his mind struggling to formulate a plan.
After the last horseâs stall was mucked out, an idea struck him. The most obvious idea of all. So obvious, he wondered if his mother had dropped him on his head at birth to make him so stupid. So obvious that he should have thought of it long ago.
Motivation renewed, Keegan sped back to the house. Heâd get himself cleaned up and head into town.
The universe had a funny way of laughing its ass off at him whenever he tried to do the right thing, because as soon as he pulled up, a wave of doom struck him like a tsunami.
Parked in the driveway, right next to Harmonyâs car, was a vehicle he recognized.
Jessicaâs.
And since the car was empty, he knew she had to already be inside.
She hadnât reacted well to his call last week. She had cried and screamed into the phone and threatened to drag him through court. She had sworn to him that he would never see his daughter, let alone lay claim to her. Jessica was the babyâs mother and Roy was her father, and Keegan was nothing but a worthless sperm donor who had never even had the decency to try to see her.
Roy had taken the phone from Jessica and tried to talk sense into Keegan.
He had been more rational, but Keegan cringed when he remembered the desperation in his own voice.
They loved the baby. Keeganâs baby. But she was as much theirs, and Keegan knew it.
He didnât want to fight with them. He was indebted to them for caring for his daughter all these months.
And yet, he couldnât give up custody when he knew in his heart that his daughter belonged with him.
She was his heart, and even though he had only known her through photographs and cashed child support checks, they were bonded together through a shared life force.
He wanted his daughter back, and no amount of gratitude would change that.
Though the last thing he wanted to do was deal with Jessica in his homeâunannouncedâhe made himself man up and go inside.
