Chapter 16: Amá

“Gustavo, please don’t.” I whimper, backing into the corner of our bedroom. “I’ll behave, I promise. I wasn’t trying to leave; I would never do that to you and Pedro.”

Gus is furious, and terrifying me.

“No? Your father is under the impression that I’m mean to you.” He growls. “Am I mean to you, Kitty?” He taunts, moving inches from me.

“No!” I stammer, trying to think of a way out of this. “No, he’s just getting old. He has too many opinions. I told him I’m happy, I swear.” I’m not lying, I did tell him I’m happy. But Diego Garcia smells lies just as well as Gus does.

“He’s waging a war for you Kitty Kat, clearly you’ve led him to believe you're unhappy. What should I do about this, hm?” He brushes a piece of hair behind my ear, pursing his lips. We’re to be married in a month and he wants to break up the marriage now… We can’t have that can we?”

“I want to marry you.” I whimper through my lie. “He’ll back off, he has to.”

“I could always put another baby in you, couldn’t I, mi amor?”

Fear rushes over my body.

Please God no.

“We don’t need another baby.” I pull on my best poker face. “I love you; I’ll stand with you Gus. It’s us. It’s always been us. We can make it through anything.”

His face flashes with lust, then suspicion eats it up.

“You’ve always been good at so many things.” He hums. “But even you can’t lie to me, Kitty.” His hands shoot around me, caging me in against the wall. “So, I’ll offer you the only bargain I’m willing to make.”

I can feel my legs shaking.

“I don’t need an offer, I swear.” Tears fall from my eyes and hit my chest. “I’ll do whatever you want, forever. Te amaré para siempre y por siempre. Remember?”

“ Ojalá fuera cierto!” He groans. “But it isn’t. You don’t love me, Kitty. You love the figment of a man you used to know.”

I can’t breathe.

“So, here’s your one-time offer, mi amor.” He pauses, rubbing a finger down my throat. “Sign away your rights to my son, and leave. Don’t come back, because I promise I won’t hesitate to kill you if you do.”

“Gus please.” More tears fall. “I don’t want to leave you.”

“Yes, you do. You don’t want to leave Pedro.” He bites back. “So, you have two options. You can stay here, to be his mom; living in fear that one day I’ll snap that pretty little neck. Or you can leave now, and never show your face in my territory again. I’ll raise Pedro as my heir and he’ll grow up without the burden of a weak-minded mother. What’s it going to be, Kitty?”

My body twitches, scaring me awake.

I wake up alone. The sun is peeking through the curtains of my room and I wince at it. It’s 6:30am, my mother was on a plane around 7pm last night. Shouldn’t she be here by now? Whatever, I can’t think about that this early.
