The Old, Shriveled Leaf

By Thursday morning, Iggy was discouraged. If you ignored the events of Sunday evening and Monday afternoon, that still meant he had been good for a total of two and a half days, which should have canceled out Monday afternoon (when, in his opinion, he had been fine) and Sunday evening (which was a minor problem that didn’t hurt anyone, and he was the one who had to take an extra shower and clean up the bathroom, so what were they upset about?). Otherwise, he had been amazing.

He had been so mature and responsible, he was practically a forty-year-old. Not once had he been late. Not once had he complained. He had done all his chores. He had been kind. He had been so kind, he carried a bag of groceries into the house without being asked! So kind, he’d helped Maribel carry the inflatable mattress up from the basement for her slumber party! So kind, he’d asked his mom if she needed any help with dinner! And then he had peeled carrots!

“I finished the carrots,” he announced.
