“Ryan, baby?”

I turned at the motherly voice behind me and saw Miss Yvette standing in the doorway with her coat hanging over her arm. “Hey, Miss. Yvette.”

“Hey honey. I’m finished with everything up front. I was going to lock up and head out, but I see you’re still here.”

“Yeah,” I answered with a sigh. “I’m just doing some extra cleaning and inventory, but I can head out with you. Two minutes, ok?”

She smiled and walked toward the front of the building. Miss Yvette was only the receptionist for the practice, but she practically ran the whole thing for us. She was always the first one here and the last one to leave, so I knew I’d officially worked as long as possible if she was the one urging me to go home.

It’d been my new routine. Come in early, leave late. Anything to avoid being home. I shook my head as I realized it. As much as I fought turning into my father, that’s exactly who I’d become.

It was just that nothing was the same anymore, and I was struggling big time to try and pull everything together. I was being a pussy about it, but I had no one telling me to “man up” either.

It never occurred to me just how much I relied on my best friend. For my sanity, for help with sound decision making, for inspiration, for stress relief, for companionship. I always knew my life was closely intertwined with Melody’s, but I never fully understood just how much she meant to me. Just how much the person I am was influenced by her.

After putting the cleaning supplies away, I turned off the light and grabbed my coat from the office closet. Miss Yvette was sitting in a chair, looking at her phone with a smile on her face as I approached.

“What are you smiling about?”

She turned the phone in my direction. “Just my grandbaby, Miles. His dad sent me this photo of him.”

The child in the photo was about two years old, grinning wildly with his arm elbow deep in a bag of chocolate chips.

“Oh he’s a cute one. That’s the one who just got transferred back from the Army, right?”

“That’s my baby. I’m glad too. Now I get to spoil Miles. That’s him right now, waiting for me to get home so we can make some cookies together.”

The mental image of Ms. Yvette covered in flour and sugar while she baked cookies with her grandson made me smile.

“Well don’t let me keep you. I’m sorry for being here so late.”

She eyed me, curiously. “I’ve noticed you’re here a lot later than usual. Is everything going okay at home?”

As much as I didn’t want to delve into it, I respected Miss Yvette enough not lie to her.

“Honestly, no. Not really.”

“Oh?”

“I don’t know,” I shook my head and shrugged. “There’s isn’t anything really wrong, I guess. Just out of sorts, if that makes sense.”

“Well what’s got you feeling this way, honey?”

I didn’t open up easily to most people.
