CHAPTER EIGHT

The flowers on her desk had started to wilt but they still looked pretty in the clear vase with a pink ribbon around them. Kristi had never received flowers before, not from her parents, Veronica, or even Cooper. What she had with Stella was uncharted territory.

“I hope I don’t fuck this up.” She sat back in her chair and closed her eyes, listening to the sounds of the telephone ringing and the conversation out front. It was a typical Thursday at Ink Proof, busy and hectic, but the day seemed to move at a snail’s pace.

Ever since that Friday night when she’d poured her soul out to Stella and they’d spent the night together at her place, she couldn’t stop worrying how things were moving too fast between them. When Stella left the next morning, she’d said she would call sometime during the week. She didn’t want Stella to leave, but she needed time to think. Stella had waited until yesterday evening to call and asked if she would like to go to a party at some dance club in the Meatpacking District she’d been invited to where one of her artists’ works was displayed. Kristi accepted, and they’d ended up talking for hours.

Now she was counting down the hours until she would see Stella again. She rocked back in her chair, anxious for the day to be over and for seven o’clock to arrive.

“Kristi?” Brooke appeared in the doorway, looking nervous.

She sat up, alarmed. “What’s up?”

Brooke thumbed over her shoulder. “Cooper is out front.”

She dug her nails into her palm and then exhaled slowly. “Thanks for the warning.”

Cooper knocked on the door and stuck his head in. “Hey, babe.”

Brooke’s mouth twisted in disgust. Kristi came around the desk, patted the irritated woman’s arm, and faced him. “When did you get back from your Vegas vacation?”

“It wasn’t a vacation. It was business.” He gave her a tentative smile and scratched his ear.

“You did a lot of business in the Vegas sun, or did you check out the tanning booths while you were there?”

He combed his fingers through his spiky black hair. “I enjoyed myself.” His nostrils suddenly flared. “Maybe if you came with me, next time, you would add some color to your pasty white skin.”

Brooke took a step forward, and Kristi grabbed her elbow. “Can you handle my three o’clock for me? Cooper and I have things to discuss.”

“Sure. You know how to find me if you need me to take care of anything, like taking out the trash.” Brooke curled her lips and called him a prick as she flounced out of the room.

She crossed her arms and settled back against the desk. He shut the door and fixed the collar of his leather jacket.

“You took Danica with you,” she said without any warning.

“Yeah. You didn’t want to come with me, and since you were in a little snit, I didn’t expect you to.”

“Snit?” She released an empty laugh. “You cheated on me, Coop! I sure as hell wasn’t going with you.
