BLOOD.
All I see is blood.
I blink a couple times, but it wonât go away. It wonât go away.
My knuckles ache, but that doesnât make any sense. Neither does the sharp pain in my chest, preventing me from taking a single breath.
Itâs not real, I tell myself. Itâs not fucking real. None of this is fucking real.
Iâm not there, Iâm not, Iâm not, Iâmâ
âWaylon!â
Some awareness returns to me when I hear my name being shouted down what feels like a long, dark tunnel. It somehow shatters through my dazeâif only for a momentâand I instantly seek out the person that ragged voice belongs to.
My brow wrinkles when I take in the familiar wide, worried blue eyes homed in on me from a few feet away. A man stands between us, but I pay him no notice.
What is Will doing here? I wonder faintly, as dread constricts my throat.
Somewhere, in the back of my mind, I know thatâs a stupid fucking question. Heâs always been here. Itâs me who disappeared.
I distantly register the shouts and wet, slapping sounds of flesh meeting flesh happening around us. Everythingâs suddenly all bright and loud and grating. My chest feels achy, and my gut clenches like I might hurl, but I canât help myself from looking around, eyes widening as I take in the chaos around me.
What the fuck happened?
The last thing I remember is grabbing that asshole just as he was about to lay into Jeremy.
âThe little faggot touched me.â
Wincing, I say, âNo.â Nonononono.
The world starts to get all fuzzy again, but Willâs still shouting my name, and heâs drawing closerâcloser, closer, closerâso I desperately hang on to whatever thin threads of reality are left so I donât get swept back under the fog.
A hand grips my wrist, and then heâs there. Right in front of me. Eyes blazing and shoulders pulled back like heâs bracing for battle. I donât hesitate in grabbing his hand.
Heâs not supposed to be here.
I need to get him out of here.
But just then, a pair of hazel eyes wink out at me through the crowd, snagging all my attention as they lay daggers on our joined hands.
Noâ¦
I donât realize Iâve moved until Willâs shouting in my ear and grabbing me by the shoulders.
Will struggles to hold me in place, keeping me from storming into the fray, but I hardly notice. All I know is I have to protect him. Canât he see that? Canât he see?
His dark, ocean blue eyes collide with mine, blotting out everything else around me as my vision tunnels, and I frown. Why is he stopping me? Why wonât he let me hurt him? The fucker deserves it.
His mouth moves, but then he freezes. His eyes go big and wide on something behind me. His grip loosens, and I visibly watch as the color leeches from his face.
He found us. He found us, he found us, he found us.
Whirling around before I think better of it, all I see is a raised fist, and itâs like Iâm suddenly a kid again.
