A Bonus Side Story

The Premium E-book for Volume 1 includes an exclusive short story! But the author wrote this extra short story just for his web novel readers, and we're bringing it to you!

The baked sweets packed with dried fruits that Kenneth had taught Latina how to make were sweet, but more than that, they were made to last a long time. If you made a soft and fluffy cake with plenty of butter and eggs, it would certainly taste good, but it wouldn’t last long into a journey.

“So you made these, little lady?”

“Yeah. For practice, before Latina makes some for Dale.”

The regulars were engaged in idle chatter again today in the Ocelot. Amongst them was a particularly rough-looking bearded man who, despite his intimidating exterior, was quite kind to Latina. Perhaps he acted soft towards her because she’d gotten attached to him so quickly, but regardless, they were now close enough that she called him “Mr. Syl.”

“It’s on the house, so eat up, Mr. Syl!”

While his name alone could make rookie adventurers cower, Sylvester just smiled back as Latina handed him the sweets along with a cup of tea. It wouldn’t have been odd for him to have a grandchild Latina’s age, but even if he had, it was hard to say if they could have possibly been this cute.

Perhaps because the sweets were still a work in progress, the shape was still a little uneven and they were a little hard, but the taste wasn’t bad. While still crunching away at the first one, Sylvester reached for a second.

“If you sold these at the shop, you could earn yourself some spending money, little lady!”

On top of the decent taste and quality, they were also premium items in a way, as Latina had made them. And since the young girl had plenty of fans at the shop, they’d definitely sell well.

However, Latina was left confused, tilting her head at Sylvester’s remark. “Kenneth’s are tastier than Latina’s, though.”

“Kenneth’s wouldn’t sell much.”

Because of the generous amount of dried fruits in the sweets, they could have a higher price tag, making them more costly than normal preserved goods. And most people would probably prioritize cheapness over taste.

“Why?”

“Because you worked so hard to make these, little lady.”

“Hmm?”

She didn’t quite seem to get it. Apparently, the serious young girl couldn’t understand the idea of value being added because of anything other than the quality of the goods themselves.

“People from the supply shops are always bringing stuff, so Kenneth must sell lots of food, right?”

“That’s not what I’m talking about...” Sylvester said with a troubled laugh, grabbing yet another sweet from the plate. He figured it’d disappoint the young girl if he didn’t finish them, and he also had no intention of giving any to the other customers, who were staring wistfully this way.

As someone who bragged that he was one of the young girl’s “special” customers and even got called by the nickname “Mr. Syl,” he understood why Latina had affected Dale so much.
