As we entered Sausalito, Ray said, “What with all the excitement we never finished our sandwiches.”

Ray and I got sushi takeout, raided Spider’s dwindling supply of Anchor Steam, and ate out on the deck.

I said, “Even though today might have been a waste of time, a part of me still enjoyed it.”

“Really.”

“I love puzzles. The harder, the better.”

“It’s why you’re such a good coder.”

“And this one’s a doozy.”

“It would be a lot more fun if people didn’t keep getting killed.”

“Of course. But sometimes I get into the challenge and forget.”

“That was a full day’s work. We going to walk to Reno tomorrow?”

“Today isn’t done yet.” It was dark and cooling fast, so we went inside. I went back to George’s emails and waded through, starting at the beginning of the summer.

Ray was fading. He got another beer and lay on his couch. He said, “I’m about to check out. Got anything?”

“Nothing, but I’m only about two weeks in. So far all I’ve got is that ‘campaign analysis coordinator’ is a very boring job.”

“I could have told you that. Except for the nonboring parts, of course, like killing Waldo.”

If he did.
