“Hey!” Symon swatted away the cat for the third time. “Cut that out.” He was trying, but not having much success dealing with their wet clothes in the mudroom while Charli got started making hot chocolate in the kitchen. He’d volunteered for the task, partly to give himself a minute to gather his thoughts. Or, more specifically, to figure out what exactly he was going to do about the feelings that were getting to be damn near impossible to ignore anymore.

Being with Charli was just…good.

Everything about being with her felt right and made him feel things he hadn’t felt in years. She made all his stress and worries disappear. And when she’d looked at him and told him she believed in him…well, shit. She lit up parts of him he didn’t even realize were inside him. And that kiss. Damn. He knew he shouldn’t have kissed her. Not when she so clearly had put him in the friend zone, but he couldn’t have stopped himself if he’d wanted to. And he hadn’t wanted to.

Her lips had melted into his, and he knew he hadn’t imagined it when she’d started to kiss him back. And he definitely hadn’t imagined that sweet little sound she’d made.

But it wasn’t right. He couldn’t just kiss her like that in the snow with no warning. Not after all these years when she’d more than made it clear that they were friends. Symon didn’t even realize until he got back to Trickle Creek just how much he’d valued that friendship, either. And he’d taken it for granted for way too long. Even after he’d been a huge asshole and taken off, and the last thing he deserved was her friendship, she was there.

He didn’t want to ruin that. Not for anything.

Which was why he’d pulled away from her before the kiss had really gotten carried away. If he was going to go there with Charli, and it appeared he was, or at least that he was going to try, he was going to do things the right way. He just needed to figure out what that was.

“Okay,” he said to the cat, yanking a mitten from its grasp. “Enough already.”

Symon scooped up the cat, who mewled in protest, and went to join Charli in the kitchen.

“Are you hungry?”

When he walked in, she turned from the counter where she was scooping chocolate powder into two mugs.

Damn. She was so pretty. Even with her hair in two tangled, wet braids, that were dripping down her back and the thermal shirt she wore, she was gorgeous. Her leggings hugged her curves in ways that made Symon very hungry indeed.

“Symon?” She stared at him. “Are you hungry?”

“Oh.” He attempted to scratch the cat behind the ears to distract himself from her ass, but the cat squirmed, demanding to be let down.

“I don’t think your cat likes me.”

She laughed. “Lilly doesn’t really like anyone but me. But she’s sweet.” She bent to pet the cat, who threaded her way through Charli’s legs.
