Chapter 26

Samantha McMillan

Even though Samantha McMillan said to Bob and Shannon that she’d told them everything she knew, I speculated that there probably were things she wouldn’t have told them. Kids never tell adults everything they know. I logged-on to the student directory and found Samantha’s phone number.

“Hi, Samantha. This is Amy Young.”

I heard her gasp. After a few seconds, she said, “Oh my god! I mean, we heard that…”

To lighten the mood, I quoted Mark Twain, “The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

“Wow. I uh, well this is—just so surprising.” I sensed no warmth in her words.

“I was wondering if we could get together and talk a little bit,” I said.

“Oh, I don’t know. I mean, you remember how things were…”

“No. Actually I don’t remember. I have no memory of anything that happened before I woke up from my coma.”

“Oh! You can’t remember anything?”

The way she emphasized anything made it sound like there was something she didn’t want me to remember.

I said, “For now, anyway. Maybe things will come back to me later.”

“Oh.” After a pause, she continued. “So, after they took you away, we heard that you’d, like, never wake up. I just can’t believe it! And then your folks said they were coming to pick up your stuff, so we boxed-up everything. They said your condition was pretty-much hopeless, so I just assumed…”

Judging from the shaking in her voice, she must have felt like she was talking to a ghost.

She continued, “Anyways, what do you want to talk about?”

“Well, like I said, my memory is completely gone. I just want to know what happened,” I explained.

“You overdosed on drugs, that’s what happened,” she said flatly.

“Wait. You think I did it to myself?”

“Well, didn’t you?”

“Samantha, it was a date rape drug that put me into the coma. And no, I didn’t do it to myself!”

“A date rape drug?”

“That’s right! Rohypnol, to be exact—a lethal dose of it.”

“Well, with all the stuff you were using…”

“Listen, I can tell that you didn’t like who I was then. I’m a different person now. Can you just give me twenty minutes?”

She sighed. “Yeah, I guess. Twenty minutes. I can meet you at the U-Center in half an hour.”

“How will I recognize you? No memory, remember?”

“I’ll wear a red jacket and white knit hat.”

I spotted Samantha before she recognized me.

“I was looking for someone with black hair,” she said. I forgot that you used to be a blonde.”

“That’s part of what I’m trying to figure out—how I got into that whole goth thing.”

“No mystery about that. It was that stoner you hung out with—Brendan what’s-his-name. God! I don’t know how you could stand to be around him.”

“Yeah, my folks showed me a picture of him. I myself don’t know how I could stand him.”

I detected a trace of a smile.

“So, does that mean you’re off the drugs?”

“Completely,” I said. “But I can’t understand how I got the way I was. That’s what I’m trying to figure out, and I’m hoping you can help me.
