Anxiously gripping Ash’s Cordovan hat, I sit in the passenger side seat of Daniela’s car as she drives us to the police station. Rain is coming down, blurring the reflection of the streetlights through the windshield.

“I can’t believe this,” Daniela says, leaning forward to wipe the condensation off the inside of the windshield as she drives. “It’s the first time he comes to one of my parties ever and he gets arrested? What a doofus!”

I stay quiet. I can’t help but feel somewhat responsible for all this. I try not to blame myself. After all, it was Josh who showed up unannounced. It was Josh who was creeping on me to make Mandy jealous. And it was Josh who called the cops.

“What were you two doing in there anyway?” Daniela asks.

My cheeks flare with heat. I shift uncomfortably in my seat, fully aware that underneath my glittery tutu are a pair of not-so-fresh panties still smelling like sex. I open the window slightly to cool the inside of the car.

“Did Ash talk to you at all tonight?” I ask.

“Ha! Did Ash talk to me? No! I didn’t even know he was coming, remember?” Her eyes are on the road as she tries to find the right setting for the windshield wipers. The rain is unpredictable as it gets lighter and heavier on a minute-to-minute basis.

“So… he didn’t talk to you at all about the engagement?”

“Hell, no. I didn’t even know he was at the party until I saw him getting arrested.”

I grind my teeth. I’ll kill him.

“Why?” She looks over at me. Her eyes flash down to the ring on my finger which I’m subconsciously playing with. Her expression twists into confusion. “What the hell is that?”

“Oh… umm.”

The car swerves as she looks back at the road. “Oh, shit!”

I grab the dashboard as she regains control of the car.

“Sorry,” she says.

“Are you sure you should be driving?”

“I haven’t had a single drink tonight if that’s what you’re asking. I never drink when I’m hosting. Too much can go wrong… like my brother getting arrested.”

I furrow my brow. “But we did shots earlier.”

“You did a shot earlier. I had a shot of Sprite.”

“You tricky little—”

“I know. God knows what’s going on back at the house right now.” The rain patters onto the windows as the wipers swish back and forth like a squeaky metronome. “Tell me about that ring. Did you get engaged?”

“I… umm… no, but sort of?”

We stop at a stoplight. The red from the traffic light is blurred through the raindrops on the windshield. Daniela looks over at me with a confused expression.

I sigh. “Yes, I’m engaged. But it’s not real. It’s fake.”

She shakes her head. “Explain please?”

I explain the situation with Alyssa’s grandparents and the woman they were trying to set Ash up with, and his temporary solution of getting engaged to me. When the light turns green again she isn’t even paying attention. It takes the car honking behind us for her to start moving again.

“Wow,” she says, gripping the steering wheel.
