Mae finished high school and went straight to university – at just 16. She graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. It was a time that she enjoyed but studying engineering as a black girl in 1970s America wasn't easy. Mae remembers that some professors would act as if she wasn't there, while others would belittle her sensible questions as if they were the "dumbest questions he'd ever heard". Undeterred, she headed off to Cornell Medical University post-graduation and continued experimenting and exploring. In her time there, she interned at medical centres and jetted off to Cuba, Kenya and Thailand to provide medical care for people there.
