Why?

The frantic question echoed around him and through him as he lay face down in the snow. He moved his hands to his ears to block out the sound, but it crashed through the darkness, boring into his soul.

He shivered. Why had this happened to them? To him? It had just been a pleasant Sunday afternoon ride with his family. Now, as he heard his beloved wife’s screams in the distance, he sensed all was lost. He wanted to move, to rise, to lift himself from the ice and away from this terrible reality, but some force beyond him tethered him to the earth. He loved Francesca. He loved Addie. They were his world. Yet he knew his world was gone. Vanished. As if it never was. As if it had already happened.
