Chapter Twelve
A few hours later, at two oâclock the next morning, there was frost in the air. Sergeant Mogens Andersen and his partner, Officer Lars Christensen, were sitting in the unmarked Cherokee, steadily drinking hot coffee from a couple of flasks. They were outside Thorâs apartment block on Dronning Ingridsvej, with just one streetlamp thirty feet to their left, and another thirty yards ahead. The combined light of the two on that freezing night was enough to induce chronic depression.
The lights in the apartment block were all out, except for one, solitary lamp in the entrance porch.
Lars studied the porch sullenly and wondered how it was that the light of that bulb could induce hopelessness and despair, where the much dimmer light of the stars could inspire hope and magical possibilities. He was about to put this thought to Mogens, when he saw a man in his late twenties or early thirties, approaching the intersection ahead of him at a brisk walk, with puffs of condensation billowing from his mouth.
âWhat kind of fool is out on a night like this, at this time of the morning?â
The man turned into the street and walked toward them, keeping his head down.
Mogens grunted. âMaybe all the crazies are out today. There is another fool coming down the hill behind us. We donât get involved unless we have to. Our mission is to watch Thor. Understood?â
âUnderstood.â
The guy drew level, stopped and leaned down to the window. Lars scowled, thinking he would have to open the window and let in the cold air. But the thought froze in his mind when he saw the man pull a suppressed semiautomatic from his jacket. He saw the cannon loom large against the glass. His heart beat wildly. He heard a pop and a splintering of glass beside him, and Mogens utter something like, âYoh!â An instant later he saw the flash of fire, and that was the last thing he was conscious of in this life.
About seventy feet above them, Thor rose from the chair he had placed beside the window, where he had been looking out at the frosted stars over the fjord, and made his way to the bedroom. There he yawned and stretched and pulled back the covers.
Seventy feet below the two men made their way in silence to the dull porch where Lars had seen no hope. One stood with his hands in his jacket pocket, looking out at the dull, cold night while the other hunched over the lock. A moment later the door opened and the two men slipped inside.
They didnât ride the elevator. They needed silence. Silence to get into the apartment. Silence to take Thor by surprise, to cripple him before they gagged and incapacitated him. Then he would talk, but he would talk quietly.
They arrived at the sixth floor. Garry was the smaller of the two. He was married and had two children he barely knew. They lived in Glasgow, but after this job he was going to buy a villa on the Costa del Sol, in Spain.
