The house looked perfectly normal.

There were no signs of damage - unlike several of the properties along the street that had their windows smashed and doors pulled off their hinges. The ones on my house were still secure.

Of course, I had no door keys...

Fuck.

My best option was to lurch round to the garden and put the back door in, which was a single paned wooden affair any self-respecting burglar would have had no trouble getting through.

I however, was no burglar. I was a zombie with terrible body co-ordination.

Unlatching the high gate at the side of the house, I entered the garden.

I made sure to shut the gate firmly behind me, just in case any of the undead got curious about I was up to and ambled round to see what all the fuss was about.

My first idea of banging my elbow hard against the glass accomplished very little, other than making me bounce away and fall into the washing line.

My second idea proved more successful.

I picked up a large stone from the rather haphazard rockery Caroline had been constructing on and off for the past two years and threw it at the glass, which shattered in a very satisfactory manner.

As I reached through to open the door, my arm scraped along a shard of glass still caught in the frame, opening up a six inch gash in the flesh.

It didn’t hurt of course, nor did it bleed.

I stared at the wound with fascination. I could see the lips of skin peeling back and the soft tissue below it. It was an anaemic pink colour with touches of blue and purple.

So this is what your muscles look like when there’s no blood pumping round them.

Trying not to think about it, I unlocked the door from the inside and stepped through the threshold.

I was home.

Excellent.

Now what?
