CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Mavis

For over a decade, the secret of a lifetime had been hidden beneath lock and key, but now, the truth belonged to both of them.

Just breathe.

Josh didn’t move. His body stood, frozen in place as the waves crashed into his shins with the rolling tide. Mavis searched his eyes to find what his mouth could not speak; they darted back and forth as he presumably pieced together every detail of the past.

“Josh, I can explain everything, but maybe let’s get out of the water first.” Tugging his arm, she coaxed him toward the beach and back to the warmth of the sand.

He moved on command with a stilted nod, dropping to the seat of an empty picnic table. His hands fell to the bench, dragging over a jagged gouge in the wood. That’s probably what your heart looks like right now.

The blood drained from his face; his pale complexion accentuated in the dwindling afternoon sunlight. Mavis sank to the sand and knelt between his legs, peering into his eyes as she rested her hands on his thighs. She squeezed his skin, the tender connection pulling him back to the present. Moving his hands on top of hers, he furrowed his brow and leaned forward.

“Pregnant?” he repeated.

His voice broke her. The ten-year secret sailing from his lips squeezed the strings around her heart, sucking the life from her body. Her vision clouded in a pool of tears, blurring his sweet face. This is it, a new beginning or the final farewell.

She nodded and pressed a kiss to the top of his hand. “Can I please try to explain why I did what I did?” she begged. A tear trickled down her cheek, and she swiped at it furiously. His face regained focus, but the eruption of anger staring back paralyzed any further explanation on her lips.

He shook his head, disbelief spewing from his soul. His grip on her fingers lessened as he nudged her away, resentment overriding any affection he’d shown since their reunion.

“How could you hide that from me?” Squinting, a crease formed across his forehead. “You were fucking pregnant?” Releasing a breath, Josh pulled his body from the bench and stepped away, scattering sand with angry stomps. His hands clasped the back of his head as his feet mindlessly shuffled, his eyes gazing out at the vast ocean.

“Joshua! Please, will you let me try and explain?” Her body convulsed as her muscles weakened, and Mavis folded her body over the picnic table seat. A curl caught in the rough wood, and she yanked it free with fury, an angry burn prickling her scalp.

Final farewell it is then.

Sand tickled her bare legs as Josh returned, dropping his body on the beach beside her.

Oh!

Leaning against the bench, he dragged his palms across his face, scratching the stubble on his cheeks and chin. “Pregnant,” he huffed out again. “Damn it, Duchess, I don’t even know where to start.” His eyes softened until her very tears reflected in his own. The anger drained from his face like the tide rolled back into the ocean.
