CHAPTER 28

The end of Life as I knew it

On one warm July night I went into the Peach Tree with Brian and leaning on the door frame was a complete stranger. She had dark brunette hair piled on the top of her head, light coloured eyes and she was pretty as a picture. She wore a shiny black vinyl coat and knee high boots. She also looked too young to be in the pub. She was with a girl friend.

They were chatting and laughing and they caught Brian’s eye too. He raised an inquisitive eyebrow and I nodded. So, drinks in hand we wandered over to work our smooth charms on the duo of damsels.

Their names were Lynn Woodward, the dark-haired one, and her friend was Liz. As we talked and dropped our none-too-subtle sexual innuendoes I noticed some odd looks being exchanged between the girls and a few giggles. Were our approaches too crude? I worried, but when I said something to Lynn like: “How about I take you home gorgeous?”

She and Liz burst into laughter and Lynne moved off the doorframe to reveal a very large bump in front of her vinyl coat.

She was well and truly pregnant and, as I discovered, very unmarried. She seemed confident despite her condition and told me she and Liz had bed-sitters in the same building, where she was staying until the birth of her child. “Where then?” I asked. She smiled and shrugged her shoulders. She was just 18 years old.

The size of her bump cooled my ardour somewhat, but Brian was still working hard on Liz, so I said I would drive the girls’ home. Brian and Liz rushed off and Lynn invited me in to wait for a while, which I thought was a better prospect than sitting in the car waiting for Brian to finish what he had started.

Lynn told me her story. She was a grammar school girl who worked as a clerk in the Guildhall offices. She had been seduced by a married man, who told her he was madly in love with her and desperately wanted her to have his baby. When his wish came true, he wasn’t quite so sure.

She was keeping the baby which would go to live with Grandma in Mansfield until she could look after it herself. It was idiotic and I suppose Quixotic, but I was falling madly in love with the girl, who was nine years younger than me, looked completely vulnerable and fragile like a butterfly. Just my type! Or was it the fact that she carrying a child, something that had avoided me for so long?

I said I wanted to see her again and she agreed and, it wasn’t long before we became lovers, albeit not terribly comfortable lovers. She had been seduced by a married man again!

In August Lynn had a daughter, Sally. I was with her and took her to the hospital where in my mood of silly chivalry said she could put my name
