I realize Friday morning that I completely ditched my first therapy appointment. Mom even sent me a reminder, but it got lost in the hundreds of texts I still havenât checked. Chalk up that appointment fee as yet another way Iâm costing my parents through all of this.
After lunch, Nina and I sit in the living room. I find myself doing this a lot these days. Sitting. Staring out the window. Itâs impossible for me to clear my thoughts. No matter what distraction I have in front of me, thereâs always the sickening truth that Iâm a suspect in a murder case. And that I have no memory or proof to defend myself.
Before Nina can say anything, a knock on the door makes me jump.
Ninaâs eyebrows furrow. âWho could that be?â she mutters. âIâm not expecting any packagesâ¦â
She peers through the peephole. âProbably some kid selling something,â she says. âIâll humor him.â
Opening the door, she begins her spiel, âIâm not going to buy anything, but youâre welcome to practiceââ She shifts her weight as a manâs voice cuts her off. âOh!â she laughs heartily. âMia, this is one of your friends!â she calls to me, then, turning her attention back to the door, she flings it open wide. âIâm so sorry, come on in.â
Still sitting in the living room, I stare at the entry. I donât have âfriends,â and certainly no friends that would a) know where I live, or b) care enough to come over.
âHey Mia,â Max says, stepping through the doorway, his hands shoved into his front pockets. âI hope itâs okay that I stopped byâyou werenât in class, and since I picked you up here...I just wanted to check on you and make sure youâre okay,â he explains.
âYeah,â I say, âIâm just really surprised. And I was up late last night.â
âIâm still not sleeping great either,â he says.
âDo you want to sit out back?â I ask. âNinaâs garden is pretty spectacular.â
Though sheâs pretending to ignore us, I see a smile lift the corners of Ninaâs lips as she places my plate and fork in the sink. I shouldâve cleared those, I realize.
âSure, if Iâm not interrupting anything.â
âJust wallowing in self-pity. But I could use a break,â I say, and he laughs. Motioning for him to follow, I lead him through the kitchen and out the patio door. Just feeling the sun on my face lifts my mood. We sit on the bench under Ninaâs pergola, the grapevines giving us partial shade from the surprisingly intense sunshine.
âHere,â Max says, passing me a card. âI told Philâs mom that Iâd get this to you.â
I stare at the loopy letters. âI canât believe she wants me to come,â I whisper. âDoesnât she thinkâ?â
âShe heard about the videos,â he says, his jaw clenching. âI thought you lost your phone.â
âMax, IâI didnât get it back until the other day. Someone found it. And I didnât know about the videos when we talked, otherwise I would have told youââ
âItâs fine,â he says, but he wonât meet my eyes.
