CHAPTER 8
July 30, 1867
Kyle mounted the light brown mare from Dylanâs stock back in Omaha and settled into the saddle as his uncle watched. She was a temporary ride and would be left with Bryn for his growing herd.
âReady for a long ride, Kyle?â Dylan asked with a marginal grin.
âYes, sir. Iâm ready, but Iâm not sure my behind is.â
Dylan laughed then said, âOkay, letâs head to Denver.â
Kyle nudged the mare forward and had her at slow trot beside Dylan so they could continue their long conversation.
Ever since theyâd boarded the train in Omaha, they had engaged in an almost non-stop dialogue interrupted only by sleep. The long train ride to Julesburg had taken longer than Dylanâs trip east from the end of track because it was a passenger train.
During that first leg of the trip, theyâd exchanged what would be classified as war stories even though neither had been in the actual war. Kyle had explained his two confrontations on his trip and then asked Dylan about his much more numerous adventures. Dylan had also talked extensively about Bryn, including how heâd won his Medal of Honor.
Now as they started their long ride to Denver, the subject shifted when Kyle asked him how heâd met Gwen.
Dylan was more than happy to tell the story beginning when heâd first spotted the small, pigtailed girl standing with the other women on the deck of the Providence.
As he talked, Kyle could see and hear the pleasure his uncle had when he spoke of his wife and after meeting her, he could understand why. When heâd gone to their home to pick out his horse, he could see the same joy in her face when she was with Dylan. Heâd never seen such bonding before and was sure that was how his mother had felt about Dylanâs brother, Huw.
When he finally finished, Kyle asked, âHow did Uncle Bryn meet Erin?â
Dylanâs explanation wasnât as animated, but his uncleâs description of Bryn and Erinâs relationship sounded much the same and he wondered how both of his uncles could have been so fortunate in their choices. Maybe it was just karma.
As they stopped for their first break to rest the horses, Dylan asked, âCan you show me how you use that club of yours? I had a hard time imagining how you could drive off two knife-wielding thieves and then dismount and disarm a rider with just a heavy stick.â
âIâll be happy to, but youâve got to show me how to use the pistol and the repeater you gave me, too.â
âIâll do that. I was really surprised to see that you had a Smith & Wesson Model 2. Most men carry one version of a Colt or the other. Was that Lowryâs pistol, the man you laid low with your club?â
âYup,â Kyle said as he slipped the bat from his bedroll.
He spent a couple of minutes working out the kinks and stiffness that was already causing him some discomfort before he grasped his bat and began his dance.
