Chapter Seven

Hannah’s cheeks hurt from smiling. Toby was funny and sweet and made her laugh without even trying. She liked hearing her stories of growing up in the city and was ridiculously elated to discover they liked so many of the same TV shows and music.

There was only one problem. They had yet to kiss, and Hannah was dying over it. Every pulse point throbbed, her heart was going a mile a minute, and her hands shook amidst a series of almosts. First her mom had hijacked the moment with a text as the tree was lit. Then Toby got a pile of group messages that required her attention. And a minute ago, Toby’s boss called just in time to interrupt another near-perfect buildup.

“I’m sorry about having to deal with all this.” Toby jotted something down on a notepad at her kitchen counter. “Two guys called out sick for the early tour tomorrow, and the sergeant wants to make sure everything is covered.”

“Does that mean you have to go in early?” Hannah asked.

“Yep.” Toby’s optimistic energy was adorable. “It’s no big deal, though. I don’t mind the extra hours.”

“I should probably get going.” Hannah checked the time and was shocked to realize it was almost eleven. Now that Toby had an early shift, she didn’t want to overstay her welcome. “I didn’t realize how late it was,” she said, standing up and hugging herself in consolation for the slight disappointment she felt.

“Can I at least walk you home?” Toby asked.

Her dad’s apartment was almost thirty blocks north, and it was near freezing out. Hannah had thoroughly intended to order a ride share. But extra time with Toby wasn’t something she wanted to pass up.

“Are you sure?” she asked. Now that the offer was out there, she didn’t want Toby to rescind, but she also didn’t want to take advantage of her kindness. “It’s seems crazy to make you leave your warm apartment.”

“Nah.” Toby waved her off and grabbed their jackets. “If you’re not in a rush to get home, I kind of want to show you something.” She looked impish and shy, like she had something up her sleeve.

“I am in no rush to get home.” It was an invitation, and Hannah hoped her tone indicated just how deeply she felt it. “But where are we going?” she asked playfully.

Toby stepped into her space and whispered, “Do you trust me?”

Hannah didn’t even have to think about her response. “Ridiculously,” she said, gazing into Toby’s brown eyes.

“Good.” Toby’s smile hitched up on one side as she leaned forward. The kiss she placed was delicate and deliberate and oh so divine. Hannah felt like she’d waited an eternity for this moment, but the payoff made every second worth it. Toby’s lips were like a perfect pillow. Plush and soft, warm and welcoming. She could get lost in them for a very long time.

Hannah felt a genuine shiver down her spine when Toby caressed her neck as her kiss lingered, and when their tongues finally touched, she legit went weak in the knees.
