Ari awoke with a start. He looked at his Intaglio watch. Three a.m. Seeing the shapely leg draped across his body, he smiled. He knew now who she was and remembered where they'd first met, though he couldn't imagine she would remember him. In a last kind gesture to please his uncle, he had agreed to escort a young starlet to a party. He'd been so anxious to have her like him that he instinctively knew she never would. Ever the sullen teenager, with only a camera to stand between him and the world, he had no defenses for her kind of beauty. His heroes were cinematographers who made the documentaries, and she was a rising starlet recently hired for one of his uncle's new films. What could they possibly have in common?
It had taken shedding a life of wealth and privilege in L.A. to become the man he was today. And yet, that didn't come so easily either.
At nineteen, he quit college, and as Ari Starns, got his first job as a diver off the coast of Long Beach. Those were the days when they took on rookies with scuba certification and a proficiency for welding. He could tolerate the gibes at his youth, the off-duty fights, some of which he started, but when he was called into his foreman's office, he held his breath. As a rookie, he was on probationary status, and there was always the chance he might be dismissed before he made journeyman.
Though Ari stood at attention, his foreman indicated he sit. And when the man took off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose, Ari knew his prospects didn't look good.
"What I got here is a team report. You know what a team report is, son?"
"I wasn't aware there was one, sir."
"We try to put our newbies in with a more seasoned crew, to help 'em acclimate and such. Make sure we made the right decision, you see?"
"You mean spies for the company, don't you?"
The foreman lifted his hand. "Now there's no need to be hot under the collar. This is the kind of job that needs tender loving care — on both sides — you know what I mean?" Seeing Ari about to object, the foreman again raised his hands in a placating gesture. "You have some real talent at welding, you're not afraid of hard work, and the guys say you're like a mother hen with chicks when it comes to your equipment."
"So what's the problem?"
The foreman rubbed a hand across his stubbled chin. "Well, now, that's a bit more difficult to define. It's not in the manual, and it's not sumthin' that can be trained into a man, it's —" He stood and limped over to a book shelf and brought back a photo album, flipped through some pages, and laid the book open on the desk.
Six men, divers, their equipment by their feet. The background looked like the North Sea, and Ari recognized a younger, slimmer version of his foreman in the middle.
