There were three tellers in position. Henry Danbridge had just left his office in conversation with a client. They were part way across the floor when Gage and his three partners stepped inside. One man closed the door and stood with his back to it.
On Gageâs nod guns were drawn, Sandovalâs shotgun making its presence known. There was no need for orders to be given. They had done this kind of thing before and knew the procedure.
âNo noise,â Gage said. âDo anything stupid and we will kill you. Simple as that. Donât believe me youâll find out the hard way. We just want the money. Paper. No coins.â
The tall, whip thin Cal Tessler pulled a couple of folded cloth bags from his pants and tossed them on the counter in front of the tellers.
âFill âem,â he said. âEmpty all the drawers.â
Gage turned his handgun on Danbridge âYou the boss man? Open the safe and show me what you got in there.â When Danbridge hesitated he said, âYou get one chance at this. You want to die for pieces of paper?â
Danbridge, as much as he liked money, liked life better and moved to do as he was told. The thick safe doors revealed even more cash.

Jim Rains took out the cloth sacks he carried and began to pack in stacks of bills.
Gage saw that the tellers had emptied their drawers. He waved his gun at them.

Sandoval, watching through the window, said, âLookinâ quiet, Hoyt.â
âItâs a quiet town. Why I picked it,â Gage said. âYou boys done? Okay, we go. Straight to the horses and ride out. Try and keep it steady.â
They gathered at the door. Gage caught Forresterâs eye and he gave a nod of understanding, freeing reins and holding the bunched horses.
They moved along the boardwalk, loose bunched and scanning the street around them. This was not their first robbery. They knew this was the time things could go wrong. The quiet before a possible storm.
They might have made it if Henry Danbridge hadnât appeared in the bank door, courage returning, and yelling with enough force to reach across the street.
âThey robbed the bank. Stop them somebody ...â
