Later, in the dark, Densmore asked the question that had been on her mind. “Why’d she leave?”

“Who?”

“Your wife.”

Jake hesitated. “Not sure. She didn’t leave a note.”

“Did you see it coming?”

“Probably should’ve. I wasn’t easy to live with when I got back. I did a lot of self-medicating. And she was impulsive, one of the things I liked about her actually. She’d just do things at the drop of a hat, like when we got married, totally spur-of-the-moment thing after we’d been dating a few weeks. We were in Vegas. She saw a chapel with a drive-up wedding window and she insisted, said it was what she’d always dreamed of, so that’s what we did.”

“And then what, you came home one day and she was just gone?”

“Yeah. Didn’t even take all her stuff, just packed a suitcase and left,” Jake said. “I tried to find her but she didn’t want to be found, I guess. She told me once she wanted to try living in Europe, so maybe she’s over there somewhere. I don’t know. Wherever she is, it’s for the best. I don’t think we were meant to last.”
