Get the subject and approach right and most of us can produce a competent How-To piece relating to our family that would be suitable for the wide range of women’s publications - not to mention those specialising in children, parenting, health care, psychology, ‘mind, body and spirit’, etc. The subject matter ranges from ‘how to arrange simple family get-togethers’ (i.e. christenings) to ‘how to avoid inter-family squabbles over wedding plans’, or coping with sibling rape, murder and divorce. Lots of light-hearted stuff to choose from as well, but the more serious the subject, the more in-depth your writing needs to be. Nevertheless, this subject probably offers the widest range of opportunities for full-length books on Self-Help and Improvement: such as Phil Jourdan’s Praise of Motherhood, Dan Cohen-Sherbok’s What Do You Do When Your Parents Live Forever; Kimerer L LaMothe’s Family Planting.

The larger your family and circle of friends, the easier it will be to draw on material suitable for How-To hints and articles. The best I could come up with was a simple good luck charm for a very special, long-term friend but perhaps you can think of more enterprising ideas – perhaps friendship is too personal to share. On the family front, what with the feuding of his family, and the amazing characters in mine, I can work this vein of experience for years.

Friends: Exercise 14

Surprisingly, this exercise turned out to be the most difficult of all in terms of producing a simple How-To on the subject of friendship. Suggestions on ‘how to make new friends’ (see Entertainment) might offer a solution, but I really struggled to find something I wanted to write about.

Family: Exercise 15

By comparison the category of ‘Family offers so much How-To material that we have our pick of topics that would be of interest to an editor from ‘how to make a family occasion speech’ to ‘how to re-home the family dog’ (see Pets). If we think about it, every single member of the (extended) family across the age-divide could probably each provide one How-To piece. From baby-toddler How-To’s to dealing with cantankerous grandparents and great-aunts, each one can provide a How-To cameo for publication.
