Chapter 8

Ocren looked around the dim restaurant. He’d been here once before. It was one of the few places where Zatera born were welcome, but even among Zatera born, he wore one bracelet too many to be welcomed with opened arms.

“Derek.” A female dressed in blue met them before they’d reached a table.

“Oziel.” Derek nodded.

“Derek.” Her voice took a worried tone as her gaze swept over Ocren. “What are you doing here?”

“Erm…we’re meeting friends…” He glanced over the tables. “…but I don’t think they’ve arrived.”

She stepped closer to Derek which had a growl escape Ocren. Derek shot him a look. “Stop it.”

Oziel’s gaze widened, then she slowly leaned closer to Derek. “I told you to hide.”

“I know, and I appreciate the warning, but the guy who was here—” Derek motioned at one of the corners, and Ocren looked at the table. It was available, and if they sat there, they’d have a perfect view of everything happening in the sitting area.

“I’m pretty sure he broke into my apartment.”

Oziel hissed which had Ocren focusing on her again.

“Exactly.” Derek waved a hand. “We’re meeting up with a friend from the police to talk some details…or something.” Derek glanced at Ocren, who had to fight the urge to drag him out of there and back to the apartment. He didn’t like anyone looking at Derek, and Oziel was looking at him.

Derek leaned closer to Oziel. “You don’t happen to know his name, do you?”

Ocren wrapped an arm around Derek’s middle which had both Derek and Oziel staring at him. Part of him was ashamed of his behavior, but he couldn’t stop himself. There were too many people watching Derek, and it didn’t help that the music kept all humans in a sedated state while it had no effect on Derek. More than one Pacurian was watching as he talked to Oziel, they studied the way he waved his hands, the way he moved too fast. Ocren could see it now, he understood how Derek had caught the man’s interest.

“Ocren, you’re suffocating me.” Derek patted his arm. Ocren wasn’t aware of having tightened his hold. He wanted to wrap his tail around Derek so he’d have both his hands free to fight off enemies.

A rush of heat coursed through his body as he started to change shape.

“Ocren!” Derek slapped his hand this time. “While I wouldn’t mind a peep show, I’m not sure tearing your clothes right now would be the best idea.”

Oziel skidded back so fast she almost fell, and the air stilled in the restaurant. Several patrons increased the distance between them by moving their chairs.

Kan and Ilqan chose that moment to step through the door. Someone in the back gasped, and Ocren could understand why. Two Zatera born together could prove to be a bit much.

“Ocren?” Kan looked at him then at the people by the tables.

Derek squeezed his arm. “The table in the corner is available.” He nodded toward the table where the man had been sitting. “Okay if we sit there, Oziel?”

Oziel nodded and stepped back more.
