Chapter 16
~Joel~
I woke up in the dark, alone and sore. It was a weirdly good feeling even if it did hurt to sit up. It made me want to get fucked endlessly, over and over again. It was scary how much I liked it. Was sex really supposed to have such a strong grip, even after it was over?
After stumbling around the room and groping for the light switch, I could finally see to find my clothes. They weren't where Marty had thrown them when he stripped me. They were draped over a chair. That was considerate of him.
As I put my clothes on, I tried to drag my mind away from sex and Marty. I had been planning to leave and what happened didn't change that. It just made it harder. But I knew there was nothing here for me.
Turning off the light and opening the bedroom door as silently as I could, I stepped out into the hallway. It was dim out there. The only light was coming from the open door to the library, and I needed to stay away from there. I could picture Marty at his desk, working tirelessly, but I tried not to dwell on him.
To my relief, my backpack was in the hall where I had dropped it. The light that streamed out of the doorway to the library and into the hall, seemed to welcome me, but I only took a few steps in that direction then stopped next to my backpack. Grabbing it, I headed for the kitchen so I wouldn't have to pass the library on my way out. I let myself out as silently as I could.
This time I was leaving without a word, but I didn't want to risk another scene. I said what I needed to say earlier today. As I headed out through the back garden, I noticed the light coming from the window on the corner of the house. That had to be the library and I couldn't leave without going closer.
I hadn't dared to go near the library door, but that light in the window drew me closer for one last look. Knowing Marty must be there, I couldn't resist. I stayed out of sight, near the window furthest from his desk.
Seen through the window, sitting at his desk, lost in his work, Marty looked so far away. It seemed to me that there was so much more than a piece of glass separating us. He was absorbed in his work, sitting in a circle of light cast by the lamp on his desk. I was out here wrapped in the darkness, starting to feel the chill in the night air as it penetrated my clothes.
I couldn't resist getting that one last look at him, but I didn't want him to see me so I hurried away. The way I was, I couldn't stay where it was safe and warm. I didn't belong there.
The gate squeaked and I winced then started to walk as fast as my hurt leg would let me.
