16. Holey Hobgoblin
Kate tutted and rolled her eyes, and I made my way back into the house. Louisa was watching out the window and beamed when I joined her.
“Oh, I’m so pleased you decided to come. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”
“Me? Why?” I said.
“Well, it’s so isolating not being one of them, isn’t it?” She searched my eyes and I didn’t have the heart to say I didn’t really feel that way.
“I think it helps that I’m a witch,” I said, trying to be diplomatic. “So, I have my own thing going on too. But as Stephen’s mate, you must hold a rank in the pack at any rate?”
“Oh, bless you, no. We’re not mated.”
“But you’re married, aren’t you?” I said, feeling confused.
“Yes, yes we are. But Stephen comes from a different era and doesn’t know how to take proper care of a house and things by himself. I’m his fourth wife now. He needed one rather than wanted one, you see, and my parents had five of us living at home, so they were pleased to get me settled. It all sounds so old fashioned nowadays, but that’s how he is.”
“And you don’t mind?” I looked at her curiously. She was younger than I’d first thought, maybe in her late twenties or only just thirty.
“I suppose you could say it’s a marriage of convenience,” she gave me a smile to show she was okay with that. “But the hard bit is living practically in the middle of nowhere and the only visitors that come are here to see my husband. It’s pack business from noon till night.”
“Yeah, I get that when I stay with Fletch. We’re constantly interrupted by pack stuff and we don’t even live in his territory.”
“But you will eventually, won’t you? I heard he lives in Dremouth to be near to you, but that will change when you leave school and get married, won’t it?”
I coughed loudly into my tea. “Um, we haven’t really talked that far ahead.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re only an hour away from here for now. It would be so nice to see you again sometime?” She looked so lonely that my heart went out to her.
“Absolutely,” I promised. “And you can email or face chat anytime you like.”
“I don’t have a computer. Stephen doesn’t like to have things he can’t work out, as they make him feel old, I think.”
“You should totally get one anyway,” I said, hoping he wouldn’t be so mean as to deprive her of contact with the outside world. I couldn’t imagine living without the Internet!
“Yes, maybe,” she said vaguely.
“Well, I can see you have a house phone anyway, so let me give you my number and you can call me anytime. Oh, except during school hours. But I’m only there another six months and it should all be easier after that.” I scribbled my number on the pad next to their phone and tore it off, handing it to her.
She tucked it into the pocket of her apron and then pointed out of the window.
