The next day during filming, he insisted we drive by Judge Ito’s house in Brentwood, where he rolled down his window and shouted, ‘Asshole’. Then he asked in a buoyant way if we wanted to drive by the house where Nicole was murdered. Around lunchtime, I phoned a few restaurants to make reservations. When he was a football player he believed he could control other players on the field with his mind. He reported that Ron Hubbard himself concluded that O.J. didn’t need to become a scientologist because he was at the highest level a human can achieve; that he, O.J. Simpson, was at the level of Jesus Christ. If you didn’t think he was deluded before this, surely you do now.

At the end of the long, tiring day, during which O.J. mentioned many times that I reminded him of Marcia Clark, O.J. was joking around and at about one o’clock in the morning pretended to stab me with a banana like Norman Bates in Psycho. The following day, his agent explained that O.J. ‘is such a kidder’ – he loves to imitate scenes from films. When I asked what film he was imitating the night before, he said, Cats … I couldn’t dream this answer up.

When I got to London, this same agent told me to leave a message on O.J.’s phone saying the film we shot of him was damaged, as an April Fool’s joke. I did leave a message but I said that the agent had slept with O.J.’s sister. I hope neither one of them comes and kills me for this.
