After dinner, Ben and Michael strolled into the parking lot, side by side, feeling full and very relaxed. The sun was still up, and the sky was cloudless and drowsy. A stray cat ran across the parking lot and behind a rusting dumpster as they approached Ben’s car. The headlights flashed twice, and the vehicle unlocked.
“This is nice. You really must have a lot of money,” Michael said as Ben opened the passenger door. Michael sat down on the Mercedes’ quilted leather seat and buckled himself in.
“Like I said, my stepfather has a lot of money.” Ben walked around and got in on the driver’s side.
“Maybe I should look into getting adopted by your stepdad?”
“Be my guest,” Ben said as he adjusted the rearview mirror. “If you can handle all the abandonment and emotional abuse.”
“I’m just kidding!” Michael said and reached over and squeezed Ben’s thigh. “Really.”
Ben reacted to Michael’s friendly touch. Something in his boxer shorts began tugging itself down his right inner thigh. He shifted uncomfortably and put his foot down on the accelerator.
“You’re in a hurry.”
“I want to get home before the sun goes down,” Ben said, glancing over at Michael.
He is very cute. I hope this works out. He’s perfect for right now. Maybe he’ll perfect for longer?
“We have another couple of hours at least,” Michael added and then opened his window. “The sun won’t set until near 9:00 pm. That’s what I love about summer, hours of daylight!”
“Winter is nice, too.”
“We don’t really have seasons here anyway. I don’t like all the darkness in wintertime. It’s so depressing,” Michael said as he tilted his head back against the headrest and let the wind blow through his dark hair.
“You know, I have one those light therapy machines for S.A.D.”
“What’s S.A.D.?”
“Seasonal Affective Disorder. It’s what people call ‘the winter blues.’”
“What do those things do?” Michael asked as he leaned his head out the window.
“They provide a full spectrum of light. It’s like real sunshine. It stimulates the feel-good chemical in our brains, you know, serotonin,” Ben said with a smile.
“I know what serotonin is,” Michael said teasingly as he leaned back inside. “You don’t have to do any man-splaining with me. We do have the internet up here.”
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know,” Michael said and looked over at Ben. “I’m teasing you.”
“Why is everyone always teasing me?”
“I don’t know. Maybe because you’re so cute when you’re teased?” Michael replied and squeezed Ben’s thigh again. He glanced down and saw the outline of Ben’s arousal.
“Oh, my! You are in a hurry.”
“What?”
“Nothing, nothing. Isn’t that the turn up ahead?” Michael said pointing and changing the subject. “Windy Point?”
“Yes. How did you know?”
“I’ve lived here my whole life. This place isn’t that big, you know.”
Ben made the left turn and soon they were pulling up in front of the summerhouse.
“It is a nice location, back here in the pines. I’ll give you that. Cursed or not, it’s cozy,” Michael said as he looked around.
“I like it, too,” Ben said, put the car in Park, and turned off the engine.
