Chapter 9

It was midday, and Leela and I spent the morning writing down the landmarks she remembered. I searched online for the addresses and I could not believe that she was this close to me the whole time. Leela was smart. She memorized the name of the mall closest to where she had lived and she counted the number of right turns she took until she got to that first landmark. She told me that her plan was to find her mom when she became an adult, so there was no way to get rid of this woman out of my daughter’s life. Except one.

I was prepared to go down for this. My daughter would hate me, but the world would be put on notice that not every mother would wait for the police in order to get justice. I could let them do it and my daughter would hate me for breaking her trust, but Sharma would spend a few years in prison then when she was released, Leela would find her and they would live happily ever after while I was alienated. No, she would be gone and I would be in prison knowing that everyone was warned not to fuck with my child or when I got out, I would find them as well.

Leela picked some flowers from her garden for Sharma, while I went into the study and locked the door. I opened the safe and looked at the weapon that I had held so many times to end the pain, but thoughts of my daughter coming home and needing me caused me to return it to its place. But I was taking it out now for a different reason. Yes, she was home, but she was brainwashed. Over my dead body would my child be the daughter of her kidnapper. She and her husband took my child and rewired her brain. Someone was going to pay. The universe exacted justice on the villain, and I would take care of the villainess.

I put the safety on and put the weapon in the waist of my pants, then I took out my phone and called my mother because I was not sure how this day would end.

"Hi, sweetheart," she greeted. "How's my granddaughter?"

"She's great."

"How did therapy go?" she asked. "I was calling you all afternoon."

"I know. It was just a lot of emotions so we were working on that. Listen, Mom, I'm just calling to tell you that if anything should happen to me, I want you to be Leela's legal guardian and Sylvia can help you with her.”

"Roman, what are you talking about?" she asked in a worried voice.

"It's nothing. Life is unpredictable, so I just want you to know that I would want you to be in charge of her care."

"After what happened?" she asked.

"I know how much Leela means to you, and I know you would give your life to protect her. You got a little complacent because you raised us and did an amazing job, so you were not expecting something like that to happen to you.
