I did mention that the backyard was a paradise, right? There was nothing else like this. Avenues of stepping stones under a tunnel of tree branches. Grassy patches that were so soft and welcoming. Small ponds and larger ponds with bright koi fish.

The fountains and benches made it feel like a Zen garden. There was even one of those large sandboxes with a rake.

Since I wasn’t doing much these days outside of learning my family, I spent a lot of time in the garden. I was never out there long before one of my new husbands found me. Today it was Ansel.

He stopped at my side and kissed my cheek, smiling like I was the moon and the stars.

“Hi,” I greet.

His smile grew. “Hello, wife.”

“My husband.”

I could almost feel his excitement radiate from him. They each reacted that way. Their compulsion to call me wife was strong and the smiles that accompanied the endearment were broad. But their pleasure at hearing me call them husband in return was even greater.

As was Ansel’s reaction today, usually they pulled me to their chests and hugged me fiercely.

“Did you need a break from the tension?” he asked.

I sighed, my smile fading. It’s been a couple days since I got my tattoo to match theirs. Since I walked into their argument. Since Meir assured me that they would make it through this. Together. But it didn’t feel like it was progressing.

At least it didn’t feel like it was getting worse. I supposed that was a win.

“Yes, but I didn’t come out here to get away from anyone. I just love the gardens.”

“They’re beautiful. I’m almost irritated that they don’t have to do anything to keep them this lush.”

“Nothing?”

Ansel shook his head, rolling his eyes. “As much as they like to spend time outside, they do nothing. Not even magically. Once the earth has direction, it takes care of itself.”

“That’s not even fair,” I said.

He laughed. “Right?! Man, I’m going to love having another nonsupernatural around. At least you’ll understand my indignation at these things.”

I would. Absolutely.

“Have you seen the stream yet?” he asked.

I shook my head. “No. Only the little ponds.”

“Come on,” he took my hand and pulled me toward a path. “Don’t take too many pains to remember the paths. They tend to change from time to time.”

“Aw, that sucks. I think I was just getting familiar with them.”

“Then they’re set to alter soon. I don’t think they like being learned.”

I laughed. Imagine a world where that made sense! “How do you know where we’re going then?”

“I don’t know the exact path, but I know the direction.” He pointed. “Back of the acre. This property abuts more private land that’s owned by monsters. Stag shifters so they have an entire sanctuary back here. There’s a stream that runs through it.”

As he finished explaining, I could hear the sound of gently moving water. It wasn’t long before it came into sight. But the thing that had me gaping were the giant lily pads.

When I say giant, I mean they were roughly the size of a double mattress.
