Kelsey was tempted to call in the next morning with an excuse to skip work. She had barely slept and kept thinking about her father and whether or not he was okay. She came downstairs for breakfast, drawn by the scent of fried sausage. Her mother stood in the kitchen, scrambling eggs in a pan and watching the small television perched on the counter near the coffeemaker.

“Good morning, Mom.” She slipped into a seat in the breakfast nook. Her mother had already set a plate and silverware for her.

“Good morning, Kelsey.” She fumbled through one of the cabinets. “Baby, where do you keep your--oh, never mind. Found it.”

“Did you sleep well?”

“I sure did! I’m sorry I was too tired to hang with you and your friends.” She brought a glass over along with a carton of orange juice. “Here, take this. By the way, Tina left an hour ago. She said Nate was called back to do something important for Salters Tech and that she had work today. Are you two okay? You seem mad at her and she looks sad.”

Kelsey shook her head. “We had an argument. I think we’re trying to work it out.”

Kelsey gave her mother a perplexed look as she helped herself to some food. “What are you watching?”

A buxom, dark-skinned lady wearing a purple headwrap and a black dress sat across from a young woman in what looked like a talk show setting. “Lady Sibley” adjusted her headwrap and reached over to hold the hand of the young woman, who had long dark hair, and addressed her.

“Your grandfather wants you to stay in school,” she belted in her sing-song voice. “I see him right now, next to you!”

The young woman sitting across from her looked shocked, but happy.

Lady Sibley continued. “My darlin’, your grandfather says to stay away from...I’m getting a Joe or J--”

“Jordan?”

“Yes, honey! Jordan. He’s no good, girl. No good for you.”

Kelsey snorted. “That woman is so fake. And why are you watching her show? You don’t even like that sort of thing.”

“How do you know she’s a fake?” Her mother asked, straightening her back and looking her up and down. “Maybe I’m just trying to understand some of this. Okay?”

Kelsey jabbed her fork at the screen. “You won’t learn anything from that fraud, Mom. I might as well have my own show. Believe me, ghosts are impatient, and they don’t hang around in order to tell people to stay in school.”

Her mother waved a dismissive hand and filled her own glass with juice. “Are you dating? Do you think you’ll get married in the
