Kelsey was tempted to call in the next morning with an excuse to skip work. She had barely slept and kept thinking about her father and whether or not he was okay. She came downstairs for breakfast, drawn by the scent of fried sausage. Her mother stood in the kitchen, scrambling eggs in a pan and watching the small television perched on the counter near the coffeemaker.
âGood morning, Mom.â She slipped into a seat in the breakfast nook. Her mother had already set a plate and silverware for her.
âGood morning, Kelsey.â She fumbled through one of the cabinets. âBaby, where do you keep your--oh, never mind. Found it.â
âDid you sleep well?â
âI sure did! Iâm sorry I was too tired to hang with you and your friends.â She brought a glass over along with a carton of orange juice. âHere, take this. By the way, Tina left an hour ago. She said Nate was called back to do something important for Salters Tech and that she had work today. Are you two okay? You seem mad at her and she looks sad.â
Kelsey shook her head. âWe had an argument. I think weâre trying to work it out.â
Her mother fetched the sausage and eggs, bringing them over in ceramic serving dishes. She shimmied across the kitchen again and brought over the portable television and set it at the table. A womanâs Caribbean accent, interrupted by rounds of applause, blasted from the T.V.âs speakers.
Kelsey gave her mother a perplexed look as she helped herself to some food. âWhat are you watching?â
âLady Sibley.â
âWhatâs that?â
âShhhh!â Her mother turned the television screen toward Kelsey so she could see the screen--and the woman to whom the voice belonged.
A buxom, dark-skinned lady wearing a purple headwrap and a black dress sat across from a young woman in what looked like a talk show setting. âLady Sibleyâ adjusted her headwrap and reached over to hold the hand of the young woman, who had long dark hair, and addressed her.
âYour grandfather wants you to stay in school,â she belted in her sing-song voice. âI see him right now, next to you!â
The young woman sitting across from her looked shocked, but happy.
Lady Sibley continued. âMy darlinâ, your grandfather says to stay away from...Iâm getting a Joe or J--â
âJordan?â
âYes, honey! Jordan. Heâs no good, girl. No good for you.â
Kelsey snorted. âThat woman is so fake. And why are you watching her show? You donât even like that sort of thing.â
âHow do you know sheâs a fake?â Her mother asked, straightening her back and looking her up and down. âMaybe Iâm just trying to understand some of this. Okay?â
Kelsey jabbed her fork at the screen. âYou wonât learn anything from that fraud, Mom. I might as well have my own show. Believe me, ghosts are impatient, and they donât hang around in order to tell people to stay in school.â
Her mother waved a dismissive hand and filled her own glass with juice. âAre you dating? Do you think youâll get married in the
