CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The meal which had started out so formally had degenerated into a piss up. Getting drunk hadn’t been Kim’s intention, but the champagne and expensive red wine just kept on flowing. The surreal atmosphere of their ill-matched threesome, the bizarre circumstances specifically, and the overawing vibe of the house generally, lent itself to a fuck-it attitude.

Kim still didn’t like Claire Mongomery, but at the same time they were on the final cheese course – all delivered to their table by the giggly, tipsy solicitor – and they had cracked open a bottle of vintage port.

The forms had been signed and whisked away before the cheese course. Kim wasn’t sure what she had signed, exactly, but it was all too late now.

“I need to go the bathroom,” she said, scraping the highbacked chair across the herringbone floor. “Shan’t be long.”

I’m slurring, she thought dimly. A pleasant numbness gripped her brain, dulling her thoughts. But she was buzzing too, lightheaded and chilled, the most relaxed she had felt in years. In fact, she almost felt good about everything. What had she been fussing about? This house was worth millions, and it was hers. How lucky was she?

And Claire Montgomery was beautiful, so what? It wasn’t her fault she looked like a goddess. What was wrong with having beautiful friends? She didn’t have to be a threat – if Josh was going to cheat on her then he could do so with anyone. Either he shopped around, or he didn’t. He was either faithful or he wasn’t. The presence of one beautiful woman didn’t change who he was as a man. He wasn’t flirting; he was friendly. They were all friendly. They were all good people.

I love these people, came the drunken thought. She staggered slightly on her feet.

“Steady there hoss,” Claire laughed.

Kim waved her off. “It’s fine. I’m fine.”

“Why don’t we put on some music?” Josh suddenly exclaimed with boyish enthusiasm, he too jumping none-too-gracefully to his feet.

Instinctively, Kim’s gaze flitted to the neck-height sideboard nestled between the two sash windows, to the baby monitor that took pride of place there. Kim had initially said no to background music, because what if it drowned out Ben’s cries?

“Fuck it,” she decided. “Put some music on, then.” Just, what had she been so paranoid about before? She really needed to lighten up.

She staggered out of the room, leaving her husband prodding at his phone and Claire Montgomery watching him, giggling.
