TYSON LOCKED THE STALL door, giving the horse a pat before aiming toward the bunkhouse. Late afternoon sunlight shone through a cloud of dust blowing down the drive, gray clouds promising an evening storm.

Things had fallen into a pattern over the last couple weeks, a needed one. There was security in knowing tomorrow would resemble today, that he’d eat, have a place to sleep, have a job to do. He and the other cowboys working at the Double R, minus Ricky’s negative influence, had also formed a bond. They’d gotten used to each other, able to joke around, to anticipate what different ones liked or disliked, and in the same way, grown comfortable with their schedule and who worked when.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t forget Aletta. The more time passed not talking to her, though, the less like it became he’d make the effort. He couldn’t talk well on a good day, much less over something so awkward. That didn’t stop him from wishing there was a way around it.

Tyson released a breath and raised his head from contemplation of his feet, meeting eyes with Jared outside the stables.

He approached, his expression subdued. “Wondered if you wanted to come tonight. Chet’s not supposed to be there.”

To the cowboy prayer night. He’d missed the last bimonthly meeting, deliberately, and could probably turn this one down. He wasn’t sure if that was a good idea, though. As much as the sequence of his days had helped him, filling his down time had become a chore. Boredom was as bad a motivator toward drinking as anything else.

But where did he stand on religion? He couldn’t answer. One thing he was sure of, though. Regardless, he needed to face Chet. And do so with his hands at his sides. Step one in that direction would be attending tonight, though Chet wouldn’t be there.

“I need to get cleaned up.”

Jared nodded, looking relieved, and Tyson strolled past him across the drive into the bunkhouse. He gathered clean clothes and headed for the showers, passing Leonard in the hallway. They paused, eye to eye.

“Going to face my demons,” Tyson said. “You want to come?”

Why he‘d phrased it that way, he wasn’t sure. Leonard, however, didn’t seem perturbed.

“If you need support.”

Tyson raised his chin. “I can wrestle a bull. I can’t stare too hard at my past.”

“Signal on the way out.”

They held in place for a moment, then Tyson continued ahead. He made quick work of his shower, struggling into his clothes on damp skin. He strolled out, barefoot, and sat on his bunk to don socks and boots. He motioned Leonard after him into the drive.

Jared looked from one to the other.

“I asked him to come,” Tyson said. Bringing Leonard was a good way to insure he held himself together this time. He’d grown fond of the kid.

“Good to have you,” Jared said.

Leonard nodded, and Jared waved them into the truck. He spun the wheel, turning around in the drive. The tires spat loose gravel behind them.
