Sunday morning Jaimie, Layla and Booker were climbing back into Max’s truck when a round man on a moped whizzed up, stopped next to them on the sidewalk and flicked up his visor.

“You kids like snakes?” he asked.

Max paused where he stood loading up his truck box with the kids’ bags and turned, ready to tell this guy to fuck off.

Was he planning to whip out his trouser snake or something?

Max’s expression must have registered with the guy that his question was creepy, and the man’s nose twitched and eyes darted back and forth between Max and the kids. “Sorry, meant no harm. Just wondering if the kids like snakes. Got a pet snake.”

In your pants?

If he said in his pants, Max was going to haul the guy off his moped and knock some fucking sense into him. Then he’d call the cops and report him.

“What the fuck, dude?” Max asked, not caring at this point that he swore in front of his nieces and nephew. It didn’t help that Max also hated snakes. Had a fear of them, in fact.

“I like snakes,” Booker said, hanging his head out the front passenger door. “How big? Like an anaconda? Those things get huge.” Excitement filled his hazel eyes as he smiled at the man on the moped.

Max remained wary of the exchange between his nephew and the moped snake man. Thankfully, Booker and the guy were a decent distance away from each other, and the man seemed to understand Max wasn’t one to be fucked with.

The guy on the moped smiled. “No, a big python. Beautiful thing. You guys leaving?”

“Going home,” Booker said, his smile dropping into a pout. “Our uncle lives here. We’re just visiting. We live—”

“Book, that’s enough,” Max said.

For Christ’s sake, this creep did not need to know where his nieces and nephews lived.

“If you’re back and want to meet my snake, let me know. She loves kids.” He nodded at Max before speeding away. Did the guy live in the neighborhood?

Or worse yet, the building?

Fighting back the shudder at the thought of a snake in the building, Max finished loading the kids’ stuff and waited for them to get all buckled in before he turned on his truck and took off back to his sister’s.

After dropping off the kids with Bridget, Max made his way over to Celeste’s house. He’d had an extra thorough shower that morning, making sure he was freshly manscaped and tidying up his close-shaved beard. He’d hit the barber right before school started, so his hair was behaving, but that wouldn’t last for more than a couple more weeks. He had a standing six-week appointment with his barber, always had. It was just easier than trying to get Massimo to squeeze him in last-minute.

Thankfully, the cat hadn’t destroyed his bedroom in the short time he and the kids were at the store, so he locked the feline back in his room with food, water and a litter box on a bunch of newspaper.
