Phillip was proud of himself. He’d walked the halls in search of Trey, Nando, and Elijah, and hadn’t gotten lost. Not much. He’d gotten turned around a few times but managed to make it to the kitchen, where Rosa was cooking.

“Hey, Phillip,” she said with a smile. “Was there something you needed?”

Phillip’s parents had abandoned him at a young age, forcing him to take care of himself in a hostile environment. He’d tried his best to stay out of the coven’s way since they weren’t too fond of him, so interacting with pack members felt strange.

Rosa reminded him of one of those aunts or grandmothers he’d seen on television. The ones that took care of their family and were the glue that held them together.

She had a nice smile, graying hair, and kind eyes. She made him feel all warm and fuzzy as she waited for him to answer her.

“I was looking for Trey, Nando, and Elijah,” he said as he sat at the table. He had no idea where Rourke was, but Phillip didn’t think his mate would leave the house without telling him. At least he didn’t think Rourke would. They were still getting to know each other.

“Trey and Nando are at the pet store,” she said as she wiped her hands on a hand towel. “Elijah runs the floral shop in town. Ben just drove him into work.”

Which meant Phillip was on his own until they returned. He’d never had friends before and was disappointed that he couldn’t hang out with them.

Now what was he going to do to fill his time?

“What are you cooking?” Phillip asked to fill the silence in the room.

“It’s Friday,” Rosa said as if Phillip should know what that meant. She must have seen the confused look on his face because she continued. “Most of the men will be in town, which means they’ll eat at the diner or Cresting Moon. I’m just making steak and potatoes for those who are still home.”

“Do you like taking care of so many people?” Phillip wasn’t sure if he could spend his life in the kitchen.

“They’re my family,” Rosa said. “Yes, I like taking care of them.”

“But don’t you want a life of your own?” Phillip wasn’t sure if he should have asked that question. It was kind of personal, but he was bored, and Rosa was fun to talk to.

She blushed. “I do have a gentleman in town who is vying for my attention.” She snapped her head around. “But don’t tell anyone. I don’t want Charles to be harassed by the pack.”

“Why would they harass him?” Phillip looked at the bowl of apples and, for the first time in his life, wished he could eat food. Well, technically he could, but it would taste like sand and he’d end up throwing it up.

He’d already tried years ago out of curiosity.

“I’m an elder,” she said. “They’re very protective of me. Ben would do a background check on him, and the others would stalk poor Charles just to see if he was a man of good standing.
