Phillip was proud of himself. Heâd walked the halls in search of Trey, Nando, and Elijah, and hadnât gotten lost. Not much. Heâd gotten turned around a few times but managed to make it to the kitchen, where Rosa was cooking.
âHey, Phillip,â she said with a smile. âWas there something you needed?â
Phillipâs parents had abandoned him at a young age, forcing him to take care of himself in a hostile environment. Heâd tried his best to stay out of the covenâs way since they werenât too fond of him, so interacting with pack members felt strange.
Rosa reminded him of one of those aunts or grandmothers heâd seen on television. The ones that took care of their family and were the glue that held them together.
She had a nice smile, graying hair, and kind eyes. She made him feel all warm and fuzzy as she waited for him to answer her.
âI was looking for Trey, Nando, and Elijah,â he said as he sat at the table. He had no idea where Rourke was, but Phillip didnât think his mate would leave the house without telling him. At least he didnât think Rourke would. They were still getting to know each other.
âTrey and Nando are at the pet store,â she said as she wiped her hands on a hand towel. âElijah runs the floral shop in town. Ben just drove him into work.â
Which meant Phillip was on his own until they returned. Heâd never had friends before and was disappointed that he couldnât hang out with them.
Now what was he going to do to fill his time?
âWhat are you cooking?â Phillip asked to fill the silence in the room.
âItâs Friday,â Rosa said as if Phillip should know what that meant. She must have seen the confused look on his face because she continued. âMost of the men will be in town, which means theyâll eat at the diner or Cresting Moon. Iâm just making steak and potatoes for those who are still home.â
âDo you like taking care of so many people?â Phillip wasnât sure if he could spend his life in the kitchen.
âTheyâre my family,â Rosa said. âYes, I like taking care of them.â
âBut donât you want a life of your own?â Phillip wasnât sure if he should have asked that question. It was kind of personal, but he was bored, and Rosa was fun to talk to.
She blushed. âI do have a gentleman in town who is vying for my attention.â She snapped her head around. âBut donât tell anyone. I donât want Charles to be harassed by the pack.â
âWhy would they harass him?â Phillip looked at the bowl of apples and, for the first time in his life, wished he could eat food. Well, technically he could, but it would taste like sand and heâd end up throwing it up.
Heâd already tried years ago out of curiosity.
âIâm an elder,â she said. âTheyâre very protective of me. Ben would do a background check on him, and the others would stalk poor Charles just to see if he was a man of good standing.
