Greyson sat in his car playing the debating game. Was he making the right decision by coming here? Should he start the car back up and high tail it out of there? He knew Annie would be freaked the moment she saw him. She already had this nervous twitch whenever they were in the same room. Now he was planning to invade her personal space.

He manned up and pulled his key from the ignition.

Annie’s apartment complex was small, and her place was ground level. He smiled when he noticed the big wreath and several lights strung about the door. That was her place for sure; the woman loved Christmas decorations.

He stood inches from the door, still having the inner debate. Just as he went to lift his hand to knock, the door flew open. Annie was standing there with a hammer in her hand. She yelped and stepped back. Of course, Greyson leapt into action and reached for her hand before she had a chance to fall. When he knew she was safe, he let go of her and stepped back, raising his arms up in surrender—who wouldn’t if they saw someone holding a hammer? “I hope that’s just for hanging Christmas decorations?” he asked, nodding toward her hand.

“What?” she said, sounding puzzled. Then she looked down at her hand and rolled her eyes. “It’s for the lights on my door.” Annie stepped around him and out onto her doorstep. “Greyson, what are you doing here?”

He was standing in her house now. “Well, I was hoping we could talk?” he said and felt something pushing at his leg. There was a cat rubbing back and forth on his shin.

“Fred, you’re a traitor.”

“Fred? Oh, that’s his name,” Greyson said and squatted down in front of the cat. He scratched behind the cat’s ears as the little guy rubbed back and forth on his hand now. “Hello there.” The cat let out a meow in a greeting. “Well, he’s social.”

“Not a cat guy?” Annie asked and hammered a nail into the door frame.

“What? Oh, I don’t know if I am a cat or dog guy. We didn’t have animals when I was growing up.”

She continued to stay busy getting the lights just perfect. “That’s sad. I can’t image my life without an animal.”

“Yeah, I’ve thought about getting a dog; a running buddy would be nice.” She didn’t respond. “What? I can feel you judging that comment.”

Annie stopped and turned toward him. “Judging? Nah, what you do with your animals is your business,” she said and stepped back into the house and around him. “Want something to drink?”

Greyson figured she would ask him to leave. “Yeah, that would be great. What do you have?”

“I picked up bourbon the other day?”

He didn’t know what to say at first. She grabbed bourbon for what? Him? Or did she like it as much as he did? “That sounds great,” he said and followed behind her. The kitchen had a large window and a café-style table that sat in front with two metal chairs.
