Chapter Six:

Seventeen and Pregnant

I got pregnant on the night of my junior prom, just a couple of days after my seventeenth birthday. I had only been dating Corey for about a month. I was happier that night than I had been in a very long time, but we barely got a chance to enjoy being together before life started coming at us at a hundred miles an hour. A few weeks after that night, I took a pregnancy test. Just like that, we weren’t just two teenagers having fun and falling in love anymore; we were about to become teen parents. Then, an ultrasound revealed we were having twins.

We barely had time to adjust to the reality of taking care of two babies when I started to notice one of our girls wasn’t developing at the same pace as her sister. This was just the beginning of our very long (sometimes terrifying) parenting journey together. The crazy thing is, Corey was the only boyfriend I ever had that I didn’t immediately start projecting myself into some imaginary future where we were married with kids. I knew right away that what we had was different from all my other relationships, and maybe that scared me a little, so I was happy to take it slow. I still believe that if we had been older and more experienced, if we had been together longer, if we hadn’t had so much thrown at us before we had a chance to adjust to being parents, that we would have been able to make it. We were so young, and we barely knew each other when I found out I was pregnant. We knew the road ahead as teen parents would be challenging, but neither one of us was prepared for the reality of having twins and raising a child with special needs. We tried so hard for it to be us against the world, but in the end, the world beat us down.

I still remember the first night I met Corey. I had started working evening shifts at the McDonald’s in Elkview. I liked working there; it was fast-paced and a lot of my friends from school and the cheer team would come through, so the shifts flew by. Robbie and I had fallen apart at the beginning of the school year, and I had been dating this guy, Will, for a couple of months. He had also just gotten out of a long-term relationship, so we were both kind of each other’s rebound. One night, towards the end of my shift, Will stopped in to pick me up from work with a friend I’d never met before. From the moment I saw Corey, there was definitely a spark between us. Later, he told me that when he saw me his first thought was, “How the heck is someone as pretty as her with Will?” I don’t think either one of us thought we’d end up dating—and if someone had told us that in
