Dominick slowly paused and looked down at Kayla. He already missed the feeling of her lips against his, but their hands were still entwined, and he traced her outer thumb with slow and deliberate strokes. The chaste kiss theyâd shared moved him outside anything heâd ever experienced. She was staring at him with wide eyes and flushed cheeks, pink lips still slightly parted. He was certain, beyond all reasonable doubt, that she was the most beautiful sight heâd ever behold. His heart had never felt so open, so full, as it did standing amidst the explosion of popped kernels with a burnt tinge still lingering in the air. At some point, theyâd need to talk about what was happening between them, and where it was leading. If they wanted to continue to develop their relationship, or hope that these intense emotions someday paled into fond memories. There was a tightening in his chest when he considered the latter.
They both leapt at the shrill ring of the house phone, and he reluctantly let go of Kaylaâs hands so she could answer it.
âBe right back.â The breathless note in her voice gave him a buzz of pleasure, the tone revealing she was just as affected by the kiss as he was. When Kayla said hello to her grandmother over the phone, he headed into the living room to give her privacy. Beyond the glass panes of the large bay window, towering evergreens, boughs thick with pine needles, stretched as far as the eye could see under a dense cover of clouds. His mind was still whirling from Kaylaâs confession about the popcorn strings sheâd been in the process of making. Sheâd remembered the simple wish from the night when they were unpacking decorations at The Candy Manor. Heâd never mentioned it to anyone before, and that she went to the trouble of buying materials to make the garlands touched him. Maybe for someone with involved parents or siblings it wouldnât have been a big deal, but Dominick was used to being second priority to his parentsâ work. This was the first time, aside from his grandmother, that someone had specifically thought of him.
âWell, that was my grandmother. Theyâve purchased the condo and will be home tomorrow.â There was something in Kaylaâs tone that made his heart clench.
âHow are you feeling about it?â He wanted to wrap her up in his arms, tell her that change was hard, but heâd help her get through it if she let him. He was still scared, though. If he kept opening up to her, he was going to get hurt.
Her shoulders lifted and fell with a long breath. âIf this is what they want, then I want it for them.â She paced over to the couch, and sat in one corner with her feet tucked neatly beneath her. âI mean, I donât live in Hollybrook anymore, and my parentsâ home is wherever their next gig is. Eventually theyâll find a buyer for the manor and that will go to pad their retirement.
