Hell is Empty

The droning buzz of the mi-go filled the titanic chamber and mixed with the rapid sound of gunshots; Porter wondered if he might go deaf. Fitting justice, maybe, since he now trod where Seth Tanner had been blinded.

It was too far away through the calamitous dark, but Porter was sure there had to be no less than twenty to thirty of the cavalry firing into the knighted chamber at the mi-go. How did they get in?

“If that’s the cavalry, where is Crazy Snake?” he asked Blue Toe.

The Indian shrugged. “I haven’t seen him since half a day before the blue coats captured me. I thought we would find them here.”

If Blue Toe and Crazy Snake had been so intent on keeping this place a secret that they even blinded good old Seth Tanner over it, then why had they agreed to letting him and Hannah inside? How did Captain Brady and the cavalry get in? Nothing made sense and the echoing booms and high-pitched buzzing tore at his ears till he could hardly stand it.

Fire from gunshots created a blinding effect in the deep dark, and along with his ringing ears he now could see only shadows and halos about the flashing light. Hannah’s hand grasped his and she shouted, “We have to get out of here! It’s a trap!”

They turned back to the door. Four mi-go shot down from the ceiling, tail stingers thrust toward them.

The stingers shot out, and with a whining buzz, slammed into the rock wall behind them—one of them tearing through Hannah’s skirt and another striking Blue Toe in the forearm.

The stalwart Blue Toe merely grunted at the vicious impact.

Porter fired his pistols in each direction, blasting a mi-go from the sky and sending the other three fleeing for cover behind massive stalagmites before looping back around for another attack.

Hannah attempted to pull the stinger from Blue Toe.

“Leave it there or he could bleed out!” shouted Porter, as he lined his sights at the oncoming mi-go.

The mi-go dove in a trident-like pattern.

Porter shot at the flying monstrosities with a pistol in each hand. A bullet pulped the tangled head of one mi-go, and it fell like a rock. What was left of its body flew apart like a split melon when it hit the ground.

The other two bobbed and weaved, avoiding Porter’s bullets. They came in from the far aside and then swarmed at Porter, each one grabbing one of his arms and lifting him off the ground. Their clawed grip was mighty, and he couldn’t very well move his arms, but he could adjust his wrists. The guns fired, and while he couldn’t line the shots up, he did put a few holes in their wings.

They hadn’t managed to move him more than twenty feet away and about ten feet up when they were forced to drop him.

Striking the ground, the wind whooshed from his lungs and he lay there, stunned.

The two mi-go landed a few feet away, buzzing angrily as they
