Chapter 20
LOUISE WOKE THE NEXT morning with a heavy weight on her ribcage. Blueâs arm lay over her. She gave him a shove but he didnât respond, so she pushed him again. âMove over, you big lug.â
His hand curled around her waist and pulled her back so her butt nestled in the warm, safe curve of his body. Her eyes drifted shut and as he kissed her neck, she felt him harden against her.
Her eyes flew open as the realization hit herâsheâd slept with Blue.
A chill washed over her as the enormity of her mistake became clear. Had sex, not just sex but intimate, fantastic sex. How had she not known it would be like that? He was so strong, so firm, yet so gentle. True Blue. She could surrender to him like to no one else because no one else knew her, knew all her secrets, the way he did.
She knew a lot about him too, though. That heâd only had a few girlfriends and didnât go to bed with someone lightly. He was much too honorable for that.
Of course she didnât either, but their parameters were different. So different.
She would never knowingly do anything to hurt himâand yet she just had. This would change everything. And if it werenât for the mess sheâd gotten herself into with Marco and the baby, she might be thinking very differently about what had happened last night, and where it might lead. But how, in good conscience, could she go there now?
Blue nibbled on her ear and his hands crept up until they brushed the underside of her breasts. She stopped his hands with her own.
âBlue.â
His arms stiffened around her. She rolled over so she was facing him andâoh, no. Instead of the warm open expression sheâd seen on his face the night before, the face of her oldest and dearest friend had closed into the mask that she suddenly realized heâd been wearing around her forâcripes, how long?
Now that she thought about it, for a long time.
But he wasnât distant last night. Last night he had opened his soul to her and his love had come pouring out like honey because, cripes on a donkey, she saw it now. He loved her. Not as a best friend or good buddy, but loved her. And she was going to hurt him.
If she promised him too muchâand by sleeping with him she may have already âshe would break his heart.
âBlue.â Even she could hear the sickening pleading in her voice. âYou know whatâs going on. I have to give him a chance.â
âWhen are you going to give me a chance?â
Her face went stiff and cold as if all the blood had been sucked out of it. âThe timingâs all wrong.â
âThe timingâs always wrong. Thereâs always a reason you canât get close. To me or to anyone.â
His words stung. She put her hands on his chest and pushed herself back to get a better look at his face. âThatâs not true. You have to
