Chapter Fifteen
“I’m parked over here,” Justin said after we’d finished up our dessert. He’d been quiet for the past few minutes, and I’d tried to find a way to break the ice again after offending him, but so far I hadn’t thought of anything.
So I followed quietly behind him as he led me to his rental car and then climbed into the passenger seat of the black vehicle, though part of me wondered if he’d prefer I climbed in the backseat so I’d be less likely to offend him again.
He’d pushed the button to start it before we got in, so my seat was already warming up when I sat down—which was nice since the seats were leather and the leggings under my dress were thin.
“This is a nice rental car,” I said after buckling in, hoping to break the tension with small talk. “Did they save the fanciest one for you?”
“They actually offered me a Jaguar,” he said as he buckled his seat belt. “But I needed something that would blend in better in Sutton Creek, so this seemed like a better option.”
“That makes sense, I guess.” I played with the strap of my seat belt. “You did say you didn’t really want to alert many people to your being back in town.”
He nodded. “I did.”
But he didn’t expound anymore. It was like he thought I was interviewing him for some juicy gossip to share and he wasn’t going to give me anything more than the most basic answers.
“Are you purposely trying to keep things vague?” I asked him, feeling mildly frustrated. “Because I’m trying to do that whole coloring over our past thing that you suggested this morning, but it seems like you don’t really want that. Was that apology a big act?”
“Of course not.” He sighed and looked at me. “I’m just out of practice in having conversations with people who don’t want something from me.”
“Are you worried I’m going to revive my old gossip blog with the details of your secret trip to Sutton Creek?”
“I really don’t know, Ivy,” he said, sounding somewhat annoyed. “In my line of work, you can’t be too careful.”
I wanted to be frustrated with him for keeping his business so close to his chest, but I really couldn’t. Because he was in the tabloids a lot.
And people did make a lot of money off of gossip they found out about his life.
“I just want to get to know you again,” I said. “If it makes you feel better, you can pat me down and make sure I’m not recording this conversation.”
He cocked an eyebrow beneath his ball cap. “You want me to pat you down?”
“Not like that!” I said too loudly for being inside a vehicle. Then I lowered my voice and said, “You know I didn’t mean that, right?”
He tilted his head to the side, a flirtatious look in his eyes. “You did already kiss me tonight. I’d say a pat down request isn’t too far off from that.”
I shook my head.
