ARTEMIS
I never knew how much she suffered. I always thought she moved on with her life so easily, leaving me in the dust to wallow in my own grief and anger. I believed I was the one who was miserable for so long, who trudged through life barely living, but seeing her like this proves how wrong I was. How dreadfully wrong.
Her mother's right. She wouldn't react this way if she didn't still have strong feelings for me. Whether they’re love or not is another question. There are too many tangled emotions between us to know anything.
She’s not the only one struggling to untangle the web.
The woman kept my son from me, and that’s not something I can just forget. It’s the ultimate betrayal, and there are so many things unsaid and undecided. But in this moment, with her in my arms and my lips against hers, none of them seem that important.
She presses her body into mine and returns my kiss fervently.
This kiss is different than the one we shared moments ago.
This one is my apology. For everything that happened. For all the ways I failed her. For not being there when she needed me so badly. And I hope she accepts it. Because I don't know what else to do or how else to make her hear the words and believe me.
“Why are you kissing my momma?”
Pen and I jerk away from each other and look down. Max stares up at us with his brow furrowed. The innocence of youth…
Of course, he has no idea why we’re kissing.
How the hell do I answer that?
I glance over at Penelope for help. Maybe she can give me some hint about how to handle Max’s probing question. She has her hand pressed over her mouth, her eyes wide. The horror at being caught enveloped in a passionate embrace with me is too much for her. She’s frozen. I can't help it. The terror in her eyes is so comical that a laugh bubbles up from my chest.
Her gaze meets mine, and she drops her hand and laughs, too, tipping her head back and pressing her hand against her flat stomach.
I kneel in front of Max. Here goes nothing. “I'm kissing your momma because I like her.”
True and to the point.
He tilts his head sideways and darts his gaze between Penelope and me. “A lot of people like my momma, and they don't kiss her.”
I bark out a laugh and ruffle his hair. He’s wise beyond his years. And observant. “You'll understand when you're older, kiddo.”
He shakes his head and scrunches up his face in disgust. “I'm never gonna kiss girls. They’re gross.”
You just wait, kid.
I push to my feet and grin at Penelope. “Looks like you're safe for a few years.”
She laughs and shakes her head. “I hope more than a few.”
Me too.
I only just learned about Max. There’s no way my fathering skills are up to the “explaining the birds and the bees” level yet.
Max tugs on my arm and grins at me.
